South East Asia - Q1 2023

 South East Asia Trip

Summary of the Journey:

Our adventure kicks off on January 9th, 2023, as we depart for Singapore. After spending a few nights exploring the vibrant city, we'll catch a flight to Vietnam, where we have approximately 30 days to immerse ourselves in its rich culture and breathtaking landscapes.

From Vietnam, our journey continues to Cambodia, where we'll uncover the ancient wonders and fascinating history of this captivating country. Afterward, we'll make our way to Thailand, indulging in its vibrant street markets, serene temples, and tropical beaches.

Next on our itinerary is Malaysia, a country known for its diverse cultural heritage and modern cityscapes. We'll explore its bustling cities, savor its mouthwatering cuisine, and experience the unique blend of traditions.

As our adventure draws to a close, we'll return to Singapore, where we'll bid farewell to Southeast Asia and embark on our journey back to London. In total, this incredible trip will span just under 90 days, filled with unforgettable memories and enriching experiences in each destination we visit.

Day 0 (Sunday) - Reposition to Heathrow

And so it begins...

The day before our journey, we had completed most of our packing, but this morning was dedicated to adding those final touches. Surprisingly, both of our bags weighed under 19 kilograms, which was a relief considering we were embarking on a 3-month adventure.

To avoid the dreaded Monday morning rush hour traffic on the M25, we decided it would be best to stay at a hotel near Terminal 5 the night before our flight to Singapore. It turned out to be a wise and cost-effective decision, as the price of a taxi would have been comparable to the hotel stay.

Our adventure officially commenced at 3:15 pm. Due to the heavy rain, we opted for a short taxi ride to the train station. We caught the 3:37 pm train from Tonbridge to London Bridge and smoothly transferred to the Jubilee Line, which took us to Bond Street. From there, we made a seamless transition to the new Elizabeth Line, enjoying the convenience of traveling directly to Heathrow. After changing at Terminal 2, we hopped on a local bus for just two stops, reaching our hotel for the night, the Thistle Hotel, in a little over 10 minutes. It took us a total of slightly over two hours to make the journey from our apartment to the hotel.

By 6 pm, we sat down for dinner at the hotel's restaurant. The food was decent, satisfying our hunger before we headed to the bar for one last beer and glass of wine. With an early start awaiting us the following morning, we retired to bed early, filled with excitement for the journey that lay ahead.

Day 1 (Monday) - Flight to Singapore

We had an early start to the day, waking up at 5:30 am. Since our next meal would be served on the plane, we enjoyed a satisfying breakfast at the hotel. Afterward, we caught a local bus just across the road, which took us to Terminal 5. From there, we transferred to a train bound for Terminal 2. With ample time to spare, we checked in smoothly.

Fortunately, we were offered the option to upgrade, which we gladly accepted. One of the perks of this upgrade was a shorter check-in line for Premium Economy, and we were even able to change our seats to ensure we would be sitting together (35 F&G).

Day flights aren't our personal preference. As soon as the plane took off, the cabin dimmed, and the blinds remained closed until landing, encouraging passengers to sleep as they traveled eastward. Despite the intention, we only managed to catch about an hour of sleep during the 13-hour journey to Singapore.

To be honest, the food on the flight was rather underwhelming. It didn't offer anything particularly unique or memorable. I opted for a beef dish, while Jem chose the fish. Throughout the majority of the flight (12 out of the 13 hours) we entertained ourselves by watching different movies and listening to music.

Day 2 (Tuesday 10th) - Singapore

After enduring a 13-hour flight from London, we finally touched down in Singapore at 7:30 am local time. Thanks to our previous three-year stint in the country, we were granted access to the expedited immigration process, bypassing any queues. It was a familiar feeling to be back in Singapore, and the warmth of the surroundings was a comforting welcome. Within 20 minutes of landing, we had collected our luggage and made our way to the arrivals hall.

Before heading to Lisa's place, where we had been graciously invited to stay for the next two nights, we decided to refuel with a much-needed coffee and snack. Remarkably, the same café we frequented back in 2019 when we first arrived was still there, so we couldn't resist revisiting it. Two cups of coffee, a croissant, and a tuna sandwich later, we made our way to the taxi rank.

Lisa warmly greeted us upon our arrival (she was working from home that day). Despite the long journey, neither Jem nor I felt particularly tired. However, we thought it wise to take a short one-hour nap, but unfortunately, sleep eluded us. Instead, we freshened up with a quick shower and were revitalized to continue our day.

Jem had an appointment with her hairstylist, ZiZi, while I headed to Suntec to pay a visit to my trusted barber. It might seem peculiar that one of our first activities upon arriving in Singapore was to get our hair cut, but it had become somewhat of a tradition for us. Following my grooming session, I ventured to a hawker center and indulged in a peppered beef dish with rice—a personal favorite. After satisfying my hunger, I hopped on a bus to Siglap, where I met Sarath at Jags, our beloved old watering hole. Later, Radha and Rohith joined us for a few pints, but I made the decision not to stay out too late, bidding farewell around 8 pm. Upon returning to Lisa's place, I had a brief chat with Oliver, enjoyed a quick glass of wine, and then it was time to call it a night. The first day had come to an end.

Although we were uncertain about our ability to fall asleep given the circumstances, it took mere minutes for both of us to drift into a deep slumber, surrendering to much-needed rest..

Day 3 (Wednesday 11th) - Singapore

Both of us woke up earlier than expected at 4 am, but fortunately, we managed to drift back to sleep and didn't wake up again until 8:30 am.

After enjoying a satisfying breakfast accompanied by a steaming cup of coffee, we felt ready to seize the day. Jem had some items to drop off at the security box and had plans to meet Khalis for lunch at 1 pm, ensuring her return to Lisa's place by 4 pm. Meanwhile, I ventured into the CBD to convert our SGD cash to VND and USD for our upcoming travels. I decided to have lunch at La Pau Sat, a familiar spot where I used to work. However, to my disappointment, the Thai basil chicken with rice and egg, which used to be my favorite, was not quite the same under the new ownership.

After my meal, I took a leisurely stroll around the area, taking in the surroundings, and then made a visit to the SmartStream offices to reconnect with colleagues. It was a pleasant reunion as I caught up with many familiar faces. Later, I savored a cup of Kopi C and hopped on the bus back to Lisa's place.

Oli arrived home around 6 pm, and we had a dinner reservation for 7:30 pm. While waiting for Lisa to join us, we decided to indulge in two pints at the Mooloola bar. With our thirst quenched, we made our way to Mango Tree, where we relished the flavors of delectable South Indian cuisine. After a delightful meal, we returned to Lisa's place, opened a bottle of wine, engaged in lively conversation, and eventually retired for the night, feeling content and fulfilled.

Day 4 (Thursday 12th) - Singapore to Vietnam

Rising at 8 am, we refreshed ourselves with a shower before indulging in a delightful breakfast. By 10:30 am, we had summoned a taxi and were all set to embark on our adventure. The taxi whisked us away to Changi Terminal 2, where we proceeded to check in for our flight to Hoi An. At the counter, we had our Vietnamese visas validated before making our way through. Feeling a bit peckish, we decided to grab a Subway sandwich and treat ourselves to a cup of coffee.

Our journey to Hoi An was facilitated by Singapore Airlines, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement as it would grant me Gold status on Krisflyer. The flight itself was smooth and uneventful. Upon landing, we effortlessly cleared security without any hiccups. Our next task was to acquire Jem's Sim card, while I opted for the convenience of an e-sim. As planned, our reliable taxi driver awaited our arrival, ready to transport us to Hoi An. The journey stretched out for approximately two hours. I must note that eSims proved to be an excellent choice, offering affordability and convenience based on our usage. Utilizing eSims allowed us to utilize our personal phones seamlessly throughout the remainder of our holiday.

Once we settled into our hotel, we eagerly set off to explore Hoi An. Taking a leisurely stroll along the riverside, we found ourselves drawn towards the charm of the old town, captivated by its alluring ambiance.

....

Day 5 (Friday 13th) - Hoi An

We kicked off our day with a delightful buffet-style breakfast at our charming boutique hotel, energizing ourselves for a day of exploration. Our first order of business was to venture into town, where we obtained tickets granting us access to five out of the 22 captivating UNESCO sites in Hoi An.

In the afternoon, we embarked on a captivating private food tour that commenced at 3 pm and extended until 7 pm. Led by Na, our exceptional guide from 'Eat Hoi An' food tours, we embarked on a circular route, indulging in a remarkable culinary journey. Along the way, we savored a tantalizing array of 12 dishes from various street vendors.

Our tasting adventure included:

  • Banh Can: Quail pancake
  • Xi Ma: Black sesame sweet soup
  • Green papaya salad with pork skin
  • Banh beo: Rice cake, both sweet and savory
  • Suckling snails: A surprisingly delicious treat
  • Banh keep: Hoi An's unique take on pizza
Having concluded the food tour, we returned to our hotel that evening, feeling immensely satisfied and content.

An interesting aspect of visiting Hoi An is the division of the city into three distinct areas, denoted as A, B, and C. Area A caters primarily to tourists, filled with establishments offering overpriced coffees and such. As we ventured further to Area B, we entered the heart of authentic Hoi An, where genuine shops and local cafés beckoned us. While we didn't have the opportunity to explore Area C, we understood it to be the vibrant residential and working hub for the locals.

Day 6 (Saturday 14th) - Hoi An

Once again, we kicked off our day with a satisfying breakfast at the hotel, relishing the delectable offerings of the buffet spread. Our morning was dedicated to organizing and arranging transfers for our upcoming travel plans, ensuring smooth journeys ahead.

Fortuitously, there was a fantastic coffee shop conveniently located across the road. We couldn't resist treating ourselves to delightful cups of coffee and refreshing smoothies, savoring the flavors (at a cost of 74k). Afterward, we made our way back to the hotel, eager to unwind by the poolside and immerse ourselves in the pages of our captivating books. It was a day of tranquility and rejuvenation.

We had pre-booked tickets for a captivating show scheduled for 6 pm. Before the performance, we opted for an early dinner at Chips & Fish & Stuff, indulging in a mouthwatering chicken rice dish and a delightful fish creation. To complement our meal, we ordered some refreshing beers.

The show we attended was none other than the mesmerizing Lune Production, where skilled acrobats astounded us with their bamboo-centric performances. As we made our way back to the hotel after the show, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets, soaking in the atmosphere, even though the area was heavily frequented by tourists.

Day 7 (Sunday 15th) - Hoi An

We had an early start today as we had a scheduled tour and were expecting to be picked up at 7:30 am. However, when we arrived at the reception, we were informed that the collection time would be closer to 7:50 am due to other hotel pickups.

The bus arrived, and along with nine other individuals from different nationalities, including Americans, Dutch, French, and Vietnamese, we embarked on a journey through the streets of Hoi An and into the picturesque countryside.

After an hour-long journey, we reached a place called "My Son," where we were about to explore the remnants of a bygone era. There was an additional entry fee, and we took a shuttle to an area that housed a 4-kilometer circular walking route, showcasing ruins from different time periods and remnants of bomb craters from the Vietnam War. Our guide, Tin, provided us with fascinating insights and allowed us ample time to wander and capture photos.

Towards the end of the ruin tour, we enjoyed a short performance by local artists before making our way back to the shuttle area for our return to the bus.

Next, the bus took us to a local family home, although it seemed more equipped to cater to larger groups. Nonetheless, we were treated to a delicious lunch consisting of pork and rice, mango and potato soup, fried egg omelet, and green bean salad. Drinks were available for an additional charge.

After lunch, we boarded a boat at the dock on the river for a pleasant 20-minute ride back to Hoi An, where we reunited with the bus to be transported to our respective hotels.

Once we freshened up, we decided to take a walk back to Zone B, the area we had explored during a previous food tour, as we needed to withdraw some cash. We knew there were Vietbank ATMs in that direction.

Having successfully obtained the money, we stopped for a drink or two and indulged in some fries. On our way back to the hotel, we passed by an enticing ice cream shop and couldn't resist treating ourselves to a delightful scoop.

Back at the hotel, we enjoyed some time by the pool, refreshing ourselves for the evening ahead. Instead of venturing into town again, we opted to try the bar downstairs in the hotel. We also checked out their food menu, which seemed reasonably priced.

After finishing our food and drinks, we moved to the veranda attached to the bar. We ordered more drinks, and Jem expressed an interest in learning to play patience (also known as solitaire). So, we sipped margaritas and played cards, enjoying a relaxing evening together.

Day 8 (Monday 16th) - Hoi An to Hue

We had a packed day ahead as we were transitioning to a new city and hotel. To make things easier, we had arranged a driver through Klook, although there was a slight delay due to confusion with the hotel location. Eventually, we were on our way to Hue in a private car, enjoying a comfortable three-hour journey. Surprisingly, we arrived at our new hotel ahead of schedule, and luckily, our room was already prepared for us to settle in.

In the afternoon, we had a guided tour of the Imperial City, which required a bit of a walk across the river. Despite the rain, we decided to take the scenic route on foot instead of opting for a taxi. The tour lasted for 2.5 hours, and our guide, Tin, impressed us with his extensive knowledge about the history and significance of the Imperial City.

After the tour, we freshened up and ventured out for dinner. We had received a recommendation for a cozy restaurant called "Madame Thu," conveniently located just around the corner from our hotel. The hotel staff had kindly made a reservation for us, and we were delighted by the delicious dishes that were popular among tourists. To end the evening on a pleasant note, we discovered a charming bar where we enjoyed a refreshing drink before making our way back to the hotel for a well-deserved rest.

Day 9 (Tuesday 17th) - Hue (DMZ Tour)

We kicked off the day with another early start and indulged in a satisfying buffet breakfast at the hotel. Our plates were filled with plenty of toast, fried eggs, and sausages to fuel our energy for the day.

At 8:30 am, Mr. Vu from Ananm Tours arrived to pick us up for our private tour, exclusively tailored for the two of us. Our destination was the DMZ, and our itinerary included a visit to the Vinh Moc tunnels, making it a comprehensive 7-hour round trip.

As we journeyed towards the DMZ, we witnessed remnants of ruins from the French and American Vietnam War bombings, showcasing the lasting impact of history.

Arriving at the DMZ, we made a picturesque stop at the 'Freedom Bridge' to capture some memorable photographs. Our next destination was the Vinh Moc tunnels, where Mr. Vu guided us through the underground labyrinth that once housed 350 people for a remarkable five years. The tight and confined spaces were a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of those who carved them by hand. Although moving around comfortably was a challenge, it was truly an awe-inspiring experience.

On our return journey, we opted for a scenic coastal route, both to avoid traffic and to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the country from a different perspective. We made an impromptu stop at a local crossroads to savor a cup of authentic Vietnamese coffee, a delightful detour not included in the tour. By 3:30 pm, we were back at the hotel, ready to unwind.

That evening, we stumbled upon a hidden gem in the backstreets—a craft beer place whose name escapes us. It offered an impressive selection of local brews, some produced onsite, while others were carefully imported from Saigon or Hanoi. The food served alongside the beers surpassed our expectations, with JC relishing pork tacos and DC savoring a delectable pulled pork burger.

With an early departure scheduled for the following day, we decided to retire to our room fairly early. Packing became our priority, ensuring that we were prepared for the next leg of our journey.

Day 10 (Wednesday 18th) - ( Train to Na Trang)

We kicked off the day with an early start once again. Although breakfast was supposed to start at 6:30 am, the staff seemed unaware and most of the food wasn't available until closer to 7 am. Nonetheless, we enjoyed a satisfying meal of toast, eggs, coffee, and juice.

By 7:30 am, we had checked out of the hotel and hailed a local taxi to take us to the train station, which was just a 10-minute ride away. The fare came to 70 vnd. Our train was scheduled for 8:32 am, but it was delayed until 9:02 am. Fortunately, we had pre-booked our tickets and had them on our phones, so we didn't need to collect anything from the ticket office. We were directed to the waiting room.

Although English wasn't widely spoken, we appreciated that the announcements were made in both Vietnamese and English. Our seats, 13 and 14, were in Coach 9, a sleeper coach. We had booked the lower beds in a 4-berth cabin, and because of this and the train being full, no one had reserved the upper bunks. The journey took us two and a half hours, providing an interesting and unique travel experience.

Upon arrival at the station, we ordered a Grab ride to take us to the hotel. Despite numerous taxi drivers vying for business, a simple "no" was enough to make them move away. We preferred the convenience of Grab, as the price was quoted upfront and there was no need to negotiate. Within minutes, our Grab arrived, and we reached the hotel in just 10 minutes.

To our surprise, even though it was only midday, two hours before the designated check-in time, our room was already prepared, and we were promptly checked in.

Feeling the need for rest and refreshment, Jem dozed off for over an hour while I took the opportunity to freshen up. Once we were both up and about, we decided to grab a quick bite at a pizza restaurant called 4P's, where we shared a delicious pizza.

With our hunger satisfied, we embarked on a walkabout, aiming to locate an ATM as we weren't sure about the availability of services during the TET holiday period. Cash was preferred over cards, as everyone seemed reluctant to use or accept them. Every penny of hard currency counted post-COVID. During our walk, we also visited the local cathedral and strolled along the riverside, admiring the vibrant flower decorations in preparation for the TET 2023 New Year celebrations. Upon returning to the hotel, Jem made use of the gym on the 15th floor, while I attended to some tasks on my laptop.

For dinner, we treated ourselves to a delightful Italian restaurant, savoring delicious pasta and ravioli. Accompanied by a glass of wine and, of course, water, it was a satisfying meal. After dinner, we made our way back to the hotel, picking up more water along the way. With an early flight scheduled for tomorrow, we needed to repack our belongings as we would only be spending one more night here.

Day 11 (Thursday 19th) - Nha Trang.

Today's start was not as early as the previous mornings since we didn't have to be at Danang airport until around 10:30 am. We decided to book a Grab taxi for convenience, as it allowed us to pay with a card and provided a clear cost estimate.

Upon arriving at the airport, we noticed that it was bustling with activity, but the queues were moving steadily. Anticipating a larger crowd due to the TET (Vietnam's New Year celebrations) travel season, we had planned to arrive early. We joined the check-in queue to obtain our boarding passes and drop off our bags. Thankfully, we had already checked in online the previous night.

The desk they initially assigned us to had a family of five engaged in a heated discussion about their luggage and the boxes they wanted to bring on board. It seemed that families traveling home for TET were carrying a significant amount of belongings. Politely, I asked to be moved to a different queue, and the staff accommodated the request, allowing us to check in without any issues.

Passing through security was a breeze. It has become easier now, with clear instructions to take out all the necessary items and place them in the trays. I'm not sure why some people still struggle to understand this process.

The departure area was spacious, and although the gate queues were relatively orderly, there were minimal announcements for boarding, which resulted in a somewhat chaotic situation.

The flight to Nha Trang was smooth and uneventful, providing us with a quick and comfortable journey.

Upon arrival, our pre-arranged taxi pickup went smoothly, although the drive from the airport to the hotel took approximately an hour.

During the hotel check-in process, they requested copies of our passports and checked our visas, as is customary. We were delighted to find that the hotel, where we would be staying for a week during the Tet holiday period, was a luxurious 5-star establishment just a block away from the beach. A short walk would take us to the beautiful shoreline.

In the evening, we discovered a delightful Cambodian restaurant for dinner, where we enjoyed a satisfying meal.

Day 12 (Friday 20th) - Nha Tranq

After a restful night's sleep, we woke up feeling refreshed around 8 am. Eager to start the day, we headed down to the hotel's breakfast buffet, which was located in a spacious room, quite different from the smaller settings of the previous hotels. It seemed that the majority of the hotel's guests were from Asian countries, as we hadn't come across any other Europeans since our arrival.

With our stomachs satisfied from breakfast, we decided to take a leisurely walk towards the beach. However, we ended up strolling along the charming promenade instead. While sitting and admiring the rolling waves, we had a delightful encounter with a young Vietnamese family. As they passed by, we exchanged warm greetings, and to our delight, the father encouraged his children to practice their English with us. This unexpected interaction turned into a lovely conversation, during which we learned that they were on holiday from Saigon, visiting their grandparents. They also shared the exciting news that there would be fireworks on Saturday night.

Continuing our promenade journey, we came across a few upscale shopping centers that caught our attention. Curiosity piqued, we explored a couple of them, discovering a range of Western goods on offer. Craving a caffeine fix, we couldn't resist the allure of a nearby Starbucks, where we sat down with two steaming Americanos, indulging in our drinks while immersing ourselves in captivating reads. Nearby, we also stumbled upon a convenient supermarket.

As the afternoon progressed, Jem headed to the hotel gym for a workout session, while I settled downstairs to start working on my blog, sharing our travel experiences online.

By 4 pm, the desire for a refreshing beer grew strong, leading us to stumble upon a charming spot called Jelly Brew in the vicinity. Delighted, we savored four pints of amber beer, perfectly complemented by a generous bowl of crispy fries.

As the clock neared 6 pm, hunger took hold, and our taste buds yearned for the comfort of pizza. Fortunately, luck was on our side, and we discovered a fantastic pizza place called 4Ps nearby. The mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked pies greeted us as we entered. Without hesitation, we ordered a tantalizing pizza topped with flavorful chicken curry and a plate of classic spaghetti bolognese, savoring every delicious bite.

Day 13 (Saturday 21st) - NhaTranq

We enjoyed another restful night's sleep, although Jem found the room a bit warm and adjusted the air conditioning around 5 am. Eager to start the day, we indulged in a satisfying buffet breakfast before embarking on a leisurely walk down to the beach. Finding the sun loungers reserved for guests of our hotel was a breeze, and we settled in around 10:30 am. For the next couple of hours, we simply basked in the soothing sounds of the waves, relishing the serene atmosphere and observing the passersby.

With the streets relatively quiet due to New Year's Eve festivities, many people had already headed home, and several establishments were closing their doors early. Sensing the need for a change of scenery, we decided to seek out a cozy coffee shop. After a bit of exploration, we stumbled upon a delightful spot where we ordered two black Americanos. Sipping our aromatic beverages, we sat back and enjoyed people-watching, soaking in the tranquil ambiance. Taking advantage of the moment, we made a quick stop at the supermarket on our way back to the hotel to plan the details of our upcoming trip to Da Lat. Researching transportation options became our focus, both from our current location to Da Lat and from Da Lat to Saigon. Excitedly, we secured a reservation for a business condo-like hotel in Da Lat for three nights.

As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to the hotel's gala dinner buffet, despite the slightly higher price tag of 800k each. The enticing menu and the promise of live music lured us in, and we were not disappointed. The delectable spread delighted our taste buds, and to our surprise, we were even treated to a complimentary glass of wine in celebration of New Year's Eve.

Around 10:30 pm, we ventured out onto the lively streets, where a vibrant stage had been set up, featuring singers and performers. Finding a spot on the pavement, we eagerly awaited the stroke of midnight, fully immersed in people-watching and absorbing the infectious energy of the crowd. As the clock struck twelve, a mesmerizing fireworks display lit up the sky, captivating our senses. With the hotel conveniently located nearby, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll back, feeling a sense of contentment and fulfillment. By 1 am, exhaustion caught up with us, and we drifted off to sleep, cherishing the memories of a remarkable and eventful day.

Day 14 (Sunday 22nd) - NaTranq

We greeted the morning around 7:30 am and made our way down to the bustling breakfast area. Despite still feeling satisfied from the indulgent buffet feast of the previous evening, we couldn't resist the temptation of omelettes on toast and a revitalizing cup of coffee.

With our appetites satiated, we embarked on a leisurely stroll to the White Buddha, a mere 20-minute walk from our hotel. The site was abuzz with activity, as throngs of people arrived to offer their prayers and blessings for the new year. Scaling the heights, we reached the pinnacle and captured some awe-inspiring photographs before descending back down.

En route to our hotel, we made a delightful pit stop for refreshing ice tea and creamy milkshakes. In the afternoon, while Jem hit the gym to engage in a workout session, I settled in online to catch up on pending work, finding a comfortable balance between productivity and relaxation.

As the day progressed, our feet carried us to the nearby sailing club, where we indulged in a solitary drink, despite the slightly higher prices. Eager to explore further, we meandered a couple of streets and chanced upon an exceptional Mexican restaurant named Cactus, which beckoned us with its enticing aromas and vibrant ambiance. We reveled in a delightful dinner, savoring the flavors of the cuisine.

With contented hearts and satisfied palates, we made our way back to the hotel, opting for an early night to rest and rejuvenate for the adventures that awaited us in the days to come.

Day 15 (Monday 23rd) - NaTranq

We welcomed another early morning, rising at 7 am, and made our way downstairs to indulge in our customary buffet breakfast. Fueled by a satisfying meal, we embarked on a brief seaside stroll before deciding to dedicate our day to the pool, enticed by the radiant sunshine that graced the outdoors.

Ascending to the rooftop pool area, we were greeted by its delightful ambiance. While Jem immersed herself in the invigorating waters, I seized the opportunity to engage in a thrilling game of Ark on my laptop. The refreshing pool water, albeit initially chilly, was a welcome respite from the warm rays overhead. With the gaming escapade concluded, it was time to bask in the sun's embrace, embracing the possibility of acquiring a sun-kissed glow. As we approached the pool, we noticed that an Australian couple had claimed the sun loungers. However, the considerate staff promptly provided us with a cozy couch bathed in sunlight, as the loungers were taken by shade.

Later in the day, we indulged in a few rounds of pool, engaging in friendly competition. Much to our delight, I emerged as the victor in most of our matches, adding a touch of triumph to our leisurely day by the poolside.

Day 16 (Tuesday 24th) - NaTranq

The day welcomed us with a change in weather, as clouds adorned the sky. Despite the overcast conditions, we savored another satisfying breakfast before opting for a Grab ride to transport us a few kilometers north, crossing the bridge to a destination known as 'Po Nagar'.

Po Nagar, a Cham temple tower, had stood since ancient times, with its establishment predating 781. Nestled in the medieval principality of Kauthara, near present-day Nha Trang in Vietnam, this historical site boasted the restoration of four main towers. We found ourselves captivated by the allure of these structures as we explored their grandeur.

Instead of relying on a taxi for our return journey, we decided to embrace the opportunity to walk back. However, as the heavens opened up, we sought shelter and a respite from the rain by pausing at a nearby coffee shop. Once the downpour subsided, we resumed our stroll, occasionally seeking shelter during passing showers.

Our path conveniently led us past Lotte Mart, where we took advantage of the opportunity to procure some delectable treats for our forthcoming bus trip to Da Lat the following day.

For dinner, we found ourselves drawn back to 'Galangas Vietnamese,' where we reveled in another delightful culinary experience.

As the evening wound down, we returned to our room, preparing our belongings for yet another transfer the next day. With the conclusion of the Tet (Chinese New Year) holidays, a new chapter of our journey awaited.

Day 17 (Wednesday 25th) - NaTranq

Today marked another day of exploration and travel. In anticipation of the day's adventures, we set our alarm for 6:45 am, ensuring an early start to enjoy a satisfying breakfast before bidding farewell to our hotel. By 8:30 am, we concluded our stay, settling the bill and receiving the return of our USD deposit. Little did we know that this brief moment in the hotel's reception would introduce us to two fascinating American individuals. They shared stories of their unique profession, traveling across Vietnam and experiencing various hotels for their website. These audacious explorers were part of the esteemed travel group, Audley. Their task was no easy feat, as they were required to visit and evaluate 27 hotels within a mere two weeks. Such an endeavor undoubtedly presented its own set of challenges.

As we prepared to embark on our journey to the bus stop, approximately 3 km away, we attempted to secure a Grab ride. Unfortunately, no available drivers were in the vicinity. Thankfully, the hotel had a reliable taxi service readily available, ensuring our timely departure.

Prior to the arrival of our bus to DaLat, we messaged Klopp, the transportation coordinator, to confirm its status. We were promptly informed of a 20-minute delay, yet advised to be prepared for its arrival, as the bus would only wait for a brief two-minute window. Finally, the bus arrived, and we joined eight other passengers for the upcoming three-hour voyage to DaLat. It was remarkable how skillfully our driver maneuvered through the bustling streets, deftly navigating past an array of motorcycles, cars, trucks, and buses, all while maintaining our steady progress.

Surviving the eventful journey, we arrived at the DaLat bus station and promptly secured a taxi to transport us to our hotel, a mere 3 km away. Once we settled into our new accommodations, we embarked on a leisurely stroll to a local attraction known as the "crazy house." Constructed by an eccentric doctor, this unconventional abode blended harmoniously with its natural surroundings. From walkways winding up into the treetops to captivating architectural features, the house proved to be a whimsical blend of avant-garde design and nature's beauty. In stark contrast to DaLat's French colonial villas, this bizarre guesthouse mesmerized us with its maze-like layout, featuring spiral staircases, sculptural bedrooms, undulating surfaces, vibrant hues, narrow bridges, and hidden nooks.

On our way back, we quenched our thirst with refreshing water and stumbled upon a delightful burger house where we relished a scrumptious dinner. Our fortuitous wanderings also led us to an extraordinary bakery on the same street, which boasted lengthy queues, a testament to its popularity among both locals and tourists. Eager to savor a delectable breakfast the next day, we each indulged in acquiring two pastries. Back in the comfort of our room, we diligently planned our itinerary, mapping out the exciting adventures that awaited us on the following day.

Day 18 (Thursday 26th) - NaTranq

We embraced a leisurely start to the day, as our hotel did not offer breakfast. Rising at 8 am, we strolled over to the nearby 'Highlands Coffee House' to satiate our morning cravings. Armed with our limited Vietnamese language skills, we attempted to order two piping hot coffees, only to find ourselves pleasantly surprised with two refreshing iced coffees instead. Well, at least the caffeine infusion was still accomplished, setting the tone for the day ahead.

Our plan for the day was to venture on foot and explore the enchanting surroundings of Da Lat. Embarking on our journey, we meandered through vibrant food and flower markets, captivated by the bustling atmosphere. It seemed that everyone was indulging in the juiciest strawberries, a delightful treat in this Tet holiday season. As we made our way towards the lake, we discovered that the local community had congregated there, enjoying the festive ambiance and partaking in leisurely paddle boat rides. This time of year appeared to be a cherished moment when individuals took respite and rejoined their families, infusing hometowns with animated liveliness.

Sauntering along one side of the lake, we absorbed the picturesque scenery, embracing the tranquility and charm that surrounded us. Eventually, we redirected our steps back into the heart of the town. Along the way, we paused to refuel with refreshing smoothies, savoring the fruity delights that offered a respite from the gentle exertion of our walk. It was during this meandering journey that we unexpectedly stumbled upon a local brewery, piquing our curiosity and prompting consideration of a potential dinner destination later in the evening.

Continuing our exploration, we ventured forth with an air of anticipation, fully aware that the culinary delights of Da Lat were waiting to be discovered. As dusk began to descend, we found ourselves drawn to the brewery we had encountered earlier. However, upon assessing the menu and pricing, we decided it was not the ideal option, as it seemed disproportionately expensive for the culinary experience it promised. With culinary discernment guiding our choices, we resolved to seek out alternative dining venues that would offer superior gastronomic delights, confident that Da Lat had much more to offer in terms of culinary excellence.

Day 19 (Friday 27th) - NaTranq

Today unfolded as the pinnacle of excitement throughout our entire journey. With an early rise, we treated ourselves to delectable pastries for breakfast within the comfort of our room. By 9 am, anticipation brimming within us, we gathered in the hotel lobby, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Dalat-easyriders. Today held the promise of an extraordinary adventure as we embarked as pillion passengers on two motorbikes. Although I had previous experience riding motorbikes, being a pillion passenger was an entirely novel experience for me. Jem, on the other hand, carried a touch of trepidation, as she had never before set foot on a motorbike.

Our enthralling journey spanned a span of six captivating hours, enveloping us in a tapestry of breathtaking experiences. Together with our skilled guides, we traversed the awe-inspiring landscapes, delving into the heart of Dalat's cultural tapestry. The tour encompassed visits to remarkable sites, including verdant coffee plantations, enchanting silk worm farms, and the vibrant tapestry of local farms. We even had the opportunity to indulge in the purchase and sampling of the renowned weasel coffee, an experience that delighted our taste buds and added a touch of adventure to our day. Navigating through the bustling currents of local traffic, we found ourselves immersed in the vibrant pulse of the city, an exhilarating sensation that left an indelible mark upon our senses.

As the clock approached 3 pm, our journey neared its conclusion, bidding farewell to the exhilarating motorbike expedition. On our way back to our sanctuary, we chanced upon a captivating establishment called "Hunters," a charming beer and grill venue. Intrigued by its allure, we made a mental note to return for our evening repast, eager to indulge in its offerings and culminate our day of exhilaration with a tantalizing dining experience.

Day 20 (Saturday 28th) - Ho Chi Minh City

Today marked our departure from the enchanting city of Da Lat as we embarked on a journey to Ho Chi Minh City. Checking out of our hotel promptly at 8 am, we hailed a taxi to whisk us away to the intercity bus station, where our eagerly awaited sleeper bus awaited. Despite a slight delay, our spirits remained high as we settled into the comfortable seats, although they proved a bit snug for my larger frame. This particular bus boasted a unique configuration, with seats cleverly transformed into beds and arranged in a double-decked layout. I found myself in the upper bunk, nestled by the window, while Jem occupied the neighboring middle aisle.

The journey unfolded before us, with our first stop arriving after 2.5 hours, affording us a brief 10-minute respite to stretch our limbs. An hour later, we made a pit stop for a quick nourishment break. Bao Loc, our first stop, welcomed us at 1:30 pm, providing a fleeting moment to soak in the surroundings. Continuing on, we reached Madagui, a seemingly midway point, at 2:30 pm, where passengers indulged in a 45-minute interlude to savor a satisfying meal.

The most arduous stretch of the expedition lay ahead, as we approached Vinh Tan around 8 pm, after circumnavigating the city's northern reaches. While our intended destination lay a mere 10 miles away on the western side, we found ourselves unexpectedly situated elsewhere. Thankfully, a benevolent soul emerged from the crowd, offering assistance in broken English and Vietnamese, assuring us of timely information on the correct departure. At 9:15 pm, we embarked on the District 1 bus, embarking on a half-hour journey that would transport us to our designated district, where we would then search for our cherished Airbnb. Opting for a Grab ride covering a short 1 km distance, we finally arrived at our sanctuary, checking in at precisely 10 pm, grateful for the comforts of our reserved abode.

Driven by our ravenous appetites and the urgency to satiate our hunger, we ventured out locally in search of sustenance. Serendipitously, we stumbled upon a nearby establishment that appeared to serve food late into the night. Satisfying our cravings, we reluctantly retired to our quarters, succumbing to slumber's embrace at 12:45 am.

Day 21 (Sunday 29th) - HCMC

Today began with an early rise at 8 am, feeling refreshed after a restful night's sleep. Our morning commenced with a delightful cup of coffee accompanied by a slice of delectable banana cake. Being fortunate enough to stay in an AirBnB equipped with a washing machine, our first order of business was to tend to our laundry needs. Given that we were already three weeks into our journey, it was high time to address this pressing task.

With the laundry underway, we embarked on our inaugural exploration of the city. However, to our chagrin, we discovered that many establishments were closed for lunch. Undeterred, we made our way to the highly recommended War Remnants Museum, a profound depiction of the Vietnam War across its expansive three floors. While some exhibits presented grim realities, others captured our imagination with their captivating narratives. Amongst the museum's highlights were the striking collection of photographs taken by courageous newspaper photographers during the war.

Having concluded our museum visit, we proceeded towards the cathedral, only to find it closed, presumably for a mass (later learning it was undergoing refurbishment for a few years). Adjacent to the cathedral stood the post office, a testament to French architectural influence from bygone years.

As we meandered back towards the shopping district, fate led us to stumble upon a pub of great intrigue called "Heart of Darkness," which Jem had previously read about. Curiosity piqued, we felt compelled to explore its offerings—an impressive array of locally brewed beers. The establishment, owned and operated by an American, proved to be one of several pubs bearing his signature.

Continuing our adventure, we proceeded to Saigon Center, a confluence of upscale shops and enticing dining establishments. Jem's curiosity was piqued by a Thai restaurant nestled within its confines, offering a tempting culinary experience. Additionally, we noted the presence of Takiyshima, a destination earmarked for future exploration.

After a day filled with exploration and discovery, we returned to our hotel to refresh ourselves. For dinner, Jem had unearthed a charming restaurant; however, upon arriving at the indicated address, we were met with disappointment, as the establishment appeared either closed or no longer in operation. Fortunately, luck was on our side, as we chanced upon an extraordinary Cambodian restaurant just across the street, promising a memorable dining experience despite its unconventional nature.

Day 22 (Monday 30th) - HCMC

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast in the comfort of our apartment before setting out towards the bustling big market. En route, we made a delightful pit stop for a rejuvenating cup of coffee.

To our dismay, the cathedral remained closed, and upon investigation, we discovered it would remain so until 2024. Determined not to let this setback dampen our spirits, we decided to explore other attractions in the vicinity. Additionally, since we were in the area, we decided to pay a visit to a nearby HSBC branch to inquire about currency exchange, specifically converting Vietnamese dong into US dollars for our upcoming trip to Cambodia. Unfortunately, they were unable to accommodate our request, prompting us to withdraw more VND and engage in a thoughtful discussion regarding alternative options.

We were directed to an exchange center down the road by a helpful tourist center nearby. While Jem continued to peruse the charming shops, I ventured to the recommended establishment and successfully procured some small USD notes, anticipating their usefulness during our Cambodian escapades.

In the afternoon, we allowed ourselves to unwind in the comfort of our apartment, tending to domestic tasks such as laundry. Later on, we ventured out to the local shops to procure some delectable provisions. Once back in the apartment, we connected the fire stick I had brought along, granting us access to a wide range of television channels—an exciting addition to our entertainment options.

For dinner, we opted to experience the renowned "Heart of Darkness," which had garnered rave reviews. While the drinks were exceptional, we found the food to be somewhat overpriced, leaving us with mixed sentiments about the overall culinary experience.

Day 23 (Tuesday 31st) - HCMC

After enjoying a satisfying breakfast at our Airbnb, we took advantage of the available washing machine to ensure our clothes were fresh and clean for the next phase of our journey, completing the task we had planned for the morning.

As the day unfolded, Jem ventured out to immerse herself in the captivating world of art at the local museum, while I stayed back in the cozy apartment, indulging in some writing and catching up on interesting YouTube videos.

In the afternoon, we ventured across the street to savor some delightful banh mi sandwiches, fueling ourselves for the adventures ahead. A Grab taxi whisked us away to the Vietnam History Museum, where we immersed ourselves in the rich tapestry of the country's past. After an enriching exploration, we summoned another Grab ride to return to the vibrant Saigon Center. We strolled through its lively avenues, taking in the sights and sounds before crossing the road to discover an eco craft store, adding an extra touch of sustainability to our day. On our way back, we couldn't resist the temptation of indulging in some more delectable ice cream.

Upon returning to the comfort of our apartment, we resumed our captivating series, "The White Lotus," diving deeper into its compelling narrative. Later in the evening, we descended downstairs and sought out a local Vietnamese restaurant, where we delighted in the flavorsome offerings that graced our dinner table, savoring the essence of authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Day 24 (Wednesday 1st) - HCMC

Our morning in the cozy Airbnb was tranquil and relaxed. Jem took care of a final small load of laundry, ensuring our clothes were fresh and ready for the upcoming journey. We savored a delightful breakfast while indulging in another captivating episode of "The White Lotus," drawing closer to the conclusion of the series.

As the apartment's wifi posed some challenges, we decided to venture out to Maison Marcos, a charming café, to enjoy our coffee while finalizing our plans for the next stage of our adventure. During our time there, we secured our flights from Siem Reap to Bangkok, setting the deadline for our departure from Cambodia on February 21st. Our accommodations and transfers had already been arranged until that point, providing us with a sense of preparedness.

Returning to the Airbnb to drop off our laptops, we embarked on a Grab taxi journey towards the cathedral, driven by our curiosity despite being aware of its closure. Nevertheless, our visit to Book Street, located just behind the cathedral, proved worthwhile. The vibrant street housed numerous stalls and shops brimming with books in various languages. Jem happily acquired a new book to accompany us on our travels. Following our literary excursion, we found ourselves at the cozy "Propaganda" café, tempted by the aromatic pho and delightful chicken rolls. The light snack turned into a filling meal that left us satiated.

As we strolled back towards the Saigon Center, we made a delightful detour to procure pastries, ensuring we had a delightful breakfast waiting for us the next morning as we bid farewell to Ho Chi Minh City. Returning to the comfort of the Airbnb, we resumed our captivating viewing of "The White Lotus," reaching the culmination of the first season. With anticipation building for the next leg of our journey, we ventured out for a memorable Thai dinner, focusing solely on the delectable main courses.

Returning to the Airbnb once more, we immersed ourselves in the final episodes of "The White Lotus," wrapping up the first season. As the night drew to a close, we made plans to pack our bags in the morning, preparing ourselves for the next exciting destination awaiting our exploration.

Day 25 (Thursday 2nd) - Ben Tre Homestay

Today marked our departure from Ho Chi Minh City as we set our sights on Ben Tre, a picturesque destination approximately two hours away. Prior to our journey, we had made arrangements for a private transfer from our Airbnb to the enchanting homestay. Jem, full of energy, headed straight to the gym upon rising at 8 am, while I indulged in a leisurely breakfast accompanied by captivating YouTube videos.

The appointed time for our car's arrival was 11:30 am. After a pleasant two-hour drive through scenic landscapes, we arrived at the homestay, where the gracious owner warmly welcomed us with a fragrant cup of tea each. As a customary practice, she kindly requested to photograph our passports for their records. Her brother swiftly attended to our luggage, ensuring their safe delivery to our designated room. To our delight, he returned bearing two refreshing coconuts, offering a revitalizing respite after our journey.

For the remainder of the afternoon, Jem found solace and tranquility in the gentle sway of the hammock, indulging in moments of relaxation and immersing herself in captivating literature. Meanwhile, I opted to immerse myself in a captivating book within the comfort of our room, savoring the solitude and the opportunity to lose myself in its pages. As evening descended, we relished a delightful dinner at 7 pm, deciding to dine at the homestay itself, enticed by its affordability in comparison to venturing out. The comfort of our room, equipped with air conditioning, ensured a peaceful and restful night's sleep, allowing us to awaken rejuvenated and ready for the adventures that awaited us.

Day 26 (Friday 3rd) - Ben Tre Homestay

Our day began with the gentle stirrings of the morning, rousing us from slumber at around 7:30 am. Eager to embrace the day ahead, we made our way downstairs and indulged in a delightful breakfast after 8 am. The spread consisted of perfectly fried eggs accompanied by a freshly baked baguette, fueling us for the adventures that awaited.

With a sense of adventure, we seized the opportunity to borrow bicycles provided by the homestay and embarked on a leisurely ride along the idyllic back roads. Though the bikes may have been a touch antiquated, their limited brakes and modest comfort did little to dampen our spirits. We ventured into town, pausing along the way to savor a revitalizing cup of coffee before eventually making our way back to the welcoming embrace of the homestay.

As the afternoon unfolded, we dedicated our time to moments of introspection, delving into captivating books and diligently planning our upcoming sojourn in Bangkok. Our preparations culminated in successfully securing a hotel reservation, ensuring a seamless transition to the next chapter of our journey.

With the tranquility of the homestay enveloping us, we surrendered to the embrace of literature, further immersing ourselves in its enchanting realms. In the midst of our leisurely pursuits, we delighted in a well-deserved beer, savoring the refreshing beverage as a testament to the beauty of moments savored and shared. As the hour approached 7 pm, we ventured downstairs to the homestay's inviting dining area, eagerly anticipating another delectable meal crafted with love and care.

Regrettably, an unexpected hiccup manifested as my iPad's screen faded to darkness, refusing to awaken. Determined to rectify the situation, I left it diligently charging overnight, hoping for a swift resolution. In the meantime, I diligently sought out Apple stores in Bangkok, fervently wishing for a timely remedy to restore the device to its former glory.

Day 27 (Saturday 4th) - mekong pottery homestay

I'm delighted to share that my iPad predicament was swiftly resolved through a hard restart, bringing a sigh of relief to our technological adventures.

To kickstart our day, we embarked on a culinary journey with a steaming bowl of beef pho, a delicious Vietnamese staple. Pronounced "fuh" like "duh," it proved to be a delightful departure from our customary egg-laden breakfasts. Accompanied by a robust cup of black coffee, sans milk, we relished the flavors that awakened our taste buds.

Following breakfast, we retreated to the comfort of our room, immersing ourselves in the realms of literature and meticulously preparing for our upcoming travels. As the clock struck 11:30 am, our taxi arrived punctually, prompting us to settle our bill in cash before bidding farewell. The ensuing two-hour journey to our next homestay took us along the most expeditious route, which included a scenic ferry ride across a picturesque river. Our taxi driver promptly paid the nominal fare of 25,000 VND (equivalent to about a euro), propelling us closer to our eagerly anticipated destination.

Arriving at the homestay, we were warmly greeted by Yennie, the owner, who introduced us to her parents with genuine hospitality. Guiding us to our cozy room, Yennie diligently documented our passports and visa stamps, ensuring a seamless check-in process. Imbued with refreshing generosity, her mother extended a gracious welcome, serving us a revitalizing concoction of iced green tea infused with kumquat juice. After a brief respite, we embarked on a leisurely walk, enticed by the allure of the surrounding scenery. Yet, the sweltering sun and scorching 32-degree Celsius heat quickly compelled us to seek solace in the homestay's cozy café. There, armed with laptops and the need to plan our imminent journey to Bangkok, we indulged in a couple of chilled beers, marveling at the establishment's commendable honesty system—a simple clipboard where patrons can note down their consumed drinks, settling the bill upon departure.

As the clock struck 7 pm, our appetites beckoned us to the dinner table, where a sumptuous feast awaited. Having pre-ordered our culinary delights the day prior, we savored a delectable ensemble comprising succulent pork, crispy flaky chicken, fragrant fried rice, comforting boiled rice, and mouthwatering spring rolls—a true celebration of Vietnamese flavors.

Post-dinner, we retired to our room, embarking on a delightful voyage of discussion and planning, envisioning a future adventure through the captivating landscapes of Spain and France. Stay tuned for forthcoming details on this exciting escapade.

Day 28 (Sunday 5th) - Mekong Pottery homestay

Rise and shine! This morning, we eagerly greeted the day, setting our alarm clocks early to rendezvous with our tour guide at 8 am. Fueling up for the adventure ahead, we enjoyed a delightful breakfast of fried eggs on toast accompanied by a steaming cup of black coffee. With satisfied appetites, we eagerly awaited our guide's arrival, knowing that an exciting day was about to unfold.

Equipped with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses to shield ourselves from the scorching sun, we gathered around our bicycles as soon as our guide appeared. Our first destination was just a short ride away, a picturesque spot by the river where a boat eagerly awaited us. After loading our bikes onto the vessel, we embarked on a serene journey across the majestic Mekong River.

The other side of the river welcomed us with vibrant fish farms, leased areas where locals diligently cultivate their aquatic harvests. We marveled at the dedication and skill involved in this traditional practice. Eager for more discoveries, we ventured further up one of the river's tributaries. Here, we gracefully transitioned to a rowing boat, gliding through the tranquil waters, taking in the sights and sounds of our surroundings.

Our expedition continued as we made our way to a bustling local market, immersing ourselves in the vibrant tapestry of flavors and colors. The journey led us along winding paths through the picturesque countryside, revealing hidden gems at every turn. We had the privilege of visiting a family that specialized in crafting rice paper, witnessing firsthand their meticulous techniques. Additionally, we explored a rice corn factory and a pottery workshop where skilled artisans crafted bricks and pots with precision. These encounters provided us with a deep appreciation for the local culture and craftsmanship.

Navigating through enchanting countryside trails, we discovered picturesque landscapes and hidden oases that would have remained undiscovered had we embarked on this journey alone. As the day drew to a close, we embarked on a short bike ride, returning to the comfort and familiarity of our homestay.

Refreshed from a quick shower, we sought the advice of Yennie, our gracious host, for lunch recommendations and transportation arrangements. Although our first choice was closed, Yennie kindly directed us to nearby establishments within walking distance. We found ourselves in a bustling shopping mall with a vibrant food court, where we indulged in a satisfying meal of bimibap. The mall also harbored a delightful supermarket and a charming highland coffee establishment, where we savored the creamy richness of cappuccinos. When it was time to head back, we reached out to Yennie, who promptly arranged a taxi to transport us back to the welcoming embrace of our homestay.

With some leisure time before dinner at 7 pm, we immersed ourselves in a world of words and images. Engrossed in our reading materials and captivated by captivating YouTube videos, we enjoyed the serenity of the evening, embracing the tranquility that surrounded us.

As the day's adventures came to a close, we eagerly anticipated the experiences that awaited us on the morrow. Drifting off to sleep, our hearts and minds brimming with the memories and delights of the day, we found solace in knowing that this incredible journey was far from over.

Day 29 (Monday 6th) - Chau Doc

Today marked a special occasion as it was my birthday. It also happened to be our transfer day from Vinh Long to Chau Doc, our final destination in Vietnam. Yennie's father, our gracious host, served as our taxi driver for the journey, which lasted approximately 3.5 hours. Navigating through the typical Vietnamese traffic with its characteristic passing and horn blowing, we made good progress. After about two hours on the road, we took a brief 10-minute break before embarking on the final leg of our journey, which seemed to fly by.

As we approached Chau Doc, we noticed that the city stretched along the river for quite a distance before reaching our hotel. Upon checking in, we were thrilled to discover that we had been assigned a suite/deluxe room offering a breathtaking view of the Mekong river delta.

The hotel occupied a strategic location where two rivers converged—one flowing north towards Cambodia and the other, I presume, originating from somewhere within Vietnam. It resembled a Y intersection. We took some time to observe the bustling activity on the river, with boats of various sizes passing by. The smaller vessels were particularly noisy due to their engines lacking silencers on the exhaust pipes.

Exploring the hotel premises, we strolled around and relished the ambiance of the lovely bar and terrace overlooking the river. Crossing the road, we found a charming coffee house and treated ourselves to two cappuccinos. Nearby, we visited a convenient coop/mart to pick up some essentials like water and crisps. On a delightful impulse, we indulged in two ice creams, savoring their sweetness as we made our way back to the hotel.

Returning to the hotel, we settled onto the terrace, marveling at the boats gliding across the water, while we enjoyed a refreshing gin and tonic and a luscious strawberry milkshake. After freshening up, we descended to the bar for pre-dinner margaritas, setting the tone for an evening of celebration. The restaurant offered an enticing menu featuring a fusion of Asian and European cuisine. It being my birthday, I opted for a delectable tenderloin steak, while Jem delighted in a mouthwatering sweet and sour beef dish that caught both our eyes and taste buds. We agreed that she would order it again tomorrow. To accompany our meal, we selected a delightful bottle of wine from Dalat, adding to the festive atmosphere.

All in all, it was a marvelous day of celebration, perfectly commemorating my birthday amidst the wonders of Vietnam.

Day 30 (Tuesday 7th) - Chau doc

Today, our plan was to indulge in a well-deserved morning of relaxation, allowing ourselves to sleep in until 9 am. However, to my surprise, I found myself wide awake at 6:30 am. Meanwhile, Jem had already risen early, captivated by the sight of the boats that would ferry us across the border on Thursday. A sizable group was departing this morning, and we couldn't help but hope that our own journey would be less crowded when the time came.

Once the clock struck 8, we made our way downstairs for a satisfying breakfast. The spread offered a delightful buffet-style experience, presenting us with a diverse array of options to suit our tastes. And, of course, the coffee was simply delightful, providing the perfect pick-me-up for the day ahead.

Embracing a leisurely pace, we opted for a laid-back day of activities. I embarked on a leisurely stroll through the local markets, which primarily catered to the residents of the area. Meanwhile, Jem decided to indulge in some pool time. However, the presence of too many flies detracted from her enjoyment. Later in the day, Jem treated herself to a reflexology session at the spa, although the practitioners communicated solely in their native language, leaving her to rely on nonverbal cues, i.e. pointing.

During the afternoon, we ventured out to grab a cup of coffee and took the opportunity to set up a new Kindle account for Jem, ensuring she would have ample reading material for the remainder of our journey. Amazon in its wisdom had decided to lock her account on her main phone, to be sorted out on our return to the UK.

As evening approached, we returned to the familiar embrace of the hotel restaurant for dinner. The establishment boasted a tempting selection of dishes, catering to a range of palates and budgets, ensuring that each guest could find something to suit their preferences.

All in all, it was a tranquil day, allowing us to unwind and relish in the simple pleasures of our surroundings. We embraced the opportunity to recharge our energies, savoring the calm before the adventures that awaited us in the days ahead.

Day 31 (Wednesday 8th) - Chau doc

Another quiet day in Chau doc.

Day 32 (Thursday 9th) - Phnom Penh

Today commenced with an early start as we had an important journey ahead, bound for Cambodia. To ensure we wouldn't miss a moment, we set the alarm for 5:15 am. Breakfast was served promptly at 6 am, and it appeared that the entire hotel had risen early for the same purpose. Although we encountered some less-than-pleasant individuals during the meal, we managed to secure seats on one of the three speed boats that would navigate the mighty Mekong River. To prevent overcrowding, each boat accommodated 40 passengers, and departure times were staggered. At 7:20 am, we settled comfortably into our seats, commencing the first leg of our expedition.

After two hours of cruising up the river, we reached our initial stop, where we underwent immigration procedures to exit Vietnam. A meticulous individual armed with a clipboard diligently examined each passenger's passport and collected $35 per person for the Cambodian visa and boat trip. Once we disembarked, we found ourselves in a waiting room for approximately 45 minutes until the passport checker returned, distributing the passports. With documents in hand, we boarded the boat once more. A brief stop at Vietnamese border control was all that was required to obtain an exit stamp, signifying our departure from the country. Subsequently, we made a more prolonged pause to secure the Cambodian visa. We patiently waited in a walled garden while the passport collector disappeared into an office with our documents. After half an hour, he emerged, issuing passports individually. Each passenger had to proceed to the police/immigration office for identity verification and stamping. The process entailed the completion of a full-page visa application, complete with photo and fingerprint documentation.

Finally, after several hours of travel, we arrived in Phnom Penh, only two hours behind schedule. Remarkably, our taxi driver patiently awaited our arrival, accommodating our delay. We embarked on a drive to our hotel, nestled in a charming area. After swiftly checking in, we ventured out to locate an ATM for currency exchange and explore a nearby supermarket. With success, we obtained both USD and Cambodian RIELS from the bank's ATMs.

Returning to the hotel, we ascended to the rooftop bar, indulging in the delights of happy hour. As the sun set on the horizon, we savored two beers and two margaritas, marveling at the breathtaking view. Subsequently, we ventured out for dinner, with Jem spotting a promising Indian restaurant just a block away. Despite our recent arrival in Cambodia, we decided to immerse ourselves in the flavors of the establishment. The food proved delightful but generous in portion, leaving us unable to finish everything. Exhausted from the day's endeavors, Jem had arranged a call with her parents at 10 pm local time. However, fatigue overcame me, and I drifted into slumber before the conversation concluded.

It had undeniably been a long and eventful day, marked by travel, immigration processes, and the anticipation of new experiences in Cambodia.

Day 33 (Friday 10th) -

We began our day with breakfast at the hotel, finding it satisfactory. Being aware of our early departure plans, we opted for an early breakfast as well. Curious about the cost of transportation to the Royal Palace, I inquired at the reception. They estimated it to be around 1 USD. However, the first driver I approached demanded an exorbitant 10 USD, which was outrageous. Undeterred, I persisted and eventually found a driver willing to take us there for 2 USD, which we paid in the equivalent amount of Cambodian riels.

Upon reaching the Royal Palace, we discovered that only the Silver Palace was accessible (with an admission fee of 20 USD, locals paid considerably less). We leisurely strolled around, capturing numerous photographs, though we couldn't help but feel that a guide would have enhanced the experience. Subsequently, we ventured to the nearby Cambodian museum on foot. Along the way, many individuals admired my beard, and Jem received compliments on being fortunate to have me :-). Unfortunately, the museum did not offer any audio tours, which was disappointing, especially considering the steep entrance fee of another 20 USD. Personally, I felt it did not justify the cost.

It's worth noting that establishments in the area typically close from around 11:30 AM to 2 PM, making it advisable to embark on explorations early in the morning when they open at 8 AM. After leaving the museum, we decided to take a leisurely walk in search of a coffee shop. Although we couldn't find the recommended one, we stumbled upon a decent Cambodian coffee establishment. However, it took approximately 15 minutes for our coffee to be served, a duration that would not be acceptable in bustling cities like London or Singapore but as we were travelling who was I to complain.

Under the scorching midday sun, we braved the 2 km walk back to the hotel, embracing the saying, "Mad dogs and English (Irish) men."

Given the intense heat, we opted to remain indoors for the remainder of the afternoon. Jem made her way to the rooftop pool, and I joined her shortly after. We reclined on the rooftop, soaking up the sun's rays. At one point, I took a break at the bar to update my blog, treating myself to a Cambodian beer while I kindly sent Jem a refreshing coke.

As evening approached, we found ourselves undecided about where to have dinner. However, a craving for a burger at a local brewery has taken hold, evoking a mischievous chuckle. We found an amazing brewery and very busy on a Friday night.

Day 34 (Saturday 11th) - Phnom Penh

We'll need to have an even earlier breakfast tomorrow since people are already up, eating, and leaving to arrive at places when they open at 8 am. By 7:30 am, the restaurant was already quiet.

Initially, we thought it would be a short walk, but the maps turned out to be inaccurate, and the 1 km distance felt longer than expected. Our first destination was the Toul Sleng Museum, also known as the Genocide Museum. In May 1976, the Khmer Rouge had transformed a school into a prison where they detained, tortured, and interrogated individuals accused of opposing the Pol Pot regime. We paid extra for the self-guided audio tour (entrance fee of $5 and audio guide fee of $5), and it proved to be worthwhile. Some of the photographs were quite harrowing, so I listened to most of the guide while sitting outside in the shade before venturing inside for a quick walkthrough of the exhibit. We spent approximately two hours exploring the museum before making our way to a local coffee spot.

As Jem desired a tuk-tuk, but none were available, we booked a car through the Tada app (costing 8500) to take us to the market. The market boasted a wide range of items, from clothes and jewelry to sunglasses and electronics. However, it was difficult to discern their authenticity, so I decided to wait until I visit Bangkok to assess the prices and make any potential purchases. It was interesting to note that the market housed the world's largest dome roof, which sparked some curiosity to investigate the actual prices of Beats earphones, Apple AirPods, Oakley sunglasses, and watches, as they were widely available and potentially more affordable.

After exploring the market, we strolled down to a nearby mall, which unfortunately didn't offer much of interest. We then hailed another tuk-tuk (costing 3700) to take us to the Wat Phnom Temple. Surprisingly, a monk there attempted to overcharge us by 20,000, but I firmly negotiated and gave him only 5000. Although he appeared displeased, I remained unbothered. It was not the behavior one would expect from a monk.

Following these activities, we decided to return to the hotel and spend some time relaxing at the pool and utilizing the gym facilities.

Day 35 (Sunday 12th) - Phnom Penh

Sunday offered the promise of a tranquil day accompanied by delightful weather. In an effort to avoid the morning rush at local dining spots, we decided to have a relaxed breakfast at 8 am.

Our primary objective for the day was to explore the parks, so we hopped on a Tuk tuk and headed to the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. From there, we embarked on a leisurely stroll back to our hotel, passing through 'Wat Batam' and then veering right into 'Independence Park.' The path led us down to the majestic Independence Monument before we meandered our way back to our accommodation.

Jemma and I spent the majority of the day basking in the sun by the rooftop pool. While she indulged in rejuvenating massages and invigorating facials, I entertained myself with captivating gaming videos on YouTube.

As dinnertime approached, we decided to revisit the Hops Beer Place. This time, we opted for a convenient tuk-tuk ride instead of walking the 15-minute distance. To our surprise, the venue was peacefully quiet compared to our previous visit on Friday night. We found ourselves as the sole diners, although a few patrons engaged in friendly games of pool. I savored my Jager schnitzel with delectable mushroom sauce and complemented it with a half-liter of the rich and flavorful Royal Fury red ale. Jemma, on the other hand, relished a classic serving of fish and chips alongside a glass of fine wine.

After unsuccessfully attempting to secure a tuk-tuk for our return journey, we decided to take a leisurely walk back to our hotel. Before retiring to our room, we treated ourselves to a nightcap at the rooftop bar, savoring the pleasant ambiance.

With the evening winding down, we completed our packing preparations and eagerly anticipated the adventures that awaited us in the days to come.

Day 36 (Monday 13th) - Battambang

Today, we departed for Battambang, a destination that deviates from the typical tourist trail as most visitors tend to head straight to Siem Reap. After an early and satisfying breakfast, we embarked on a pleasant two-hour journey, eventually arriving at the tallest building in Battambang. As this city is not primarily geared towards tourism, we took the opportunity to explore the local area, venturing into the nearby market. However, we found that it didn't offer much for tourists. Undeterred, we discovered a charming café just across the road and treated ourselves to delightful vanilla frappes, savoring the flavors and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

When dinner time arrived, we made our way to 'Pizzeria da Claudio,' a relatively new Italian restaurant that had only opened its doors five months ago. Despite there being a group of 10 people ahead of us, we were in no rush and patiently waited for our pizzas to be served. And let me tell you, they were absolutely worth the wait! Each bite was a burst of authentic flavors that surpassed any pizza we had ever tasted before. To our surprise and delight, the owner himself came over to our table to chat and express his gratitude for our patience. As a gesture of his appreciation, he graciously offered us complimentary limoncellos to conclude the evening on a high note.

Our time in Battambang may have been unconventional, but it allowed us to discover hidden gems and enjoy a memorable dining experience that exceeded our expectations.

Day 37 (Tuesday 14th) - Battambang

We started the day with a satisfactory breakfast at the hotel before being picked up by a friendly tuk-tuk driver who would accompany us on our day trip. Our knowledgeable guide, Savet, joined us as we embarked on an adventure-filled itinerary. Our first stop was Savet's family home, where we collected bicycles for a scenic ride through his childhood village. It was truly fascinating to witness the authenticity of his parents' house and the vast expanse of their land that still remained intact. Along the way, Savet shared insightful information about the various trees in the garden, including an interesting tidbit about bananas, which only bear fruit once on a tree—a fact that was entirely new to us.

After a delightful cycling excursion along country lanes, we returned to Savet's house to reunite with our tuk-tuk. From there, Savet took us to an array of captivating locations. We explored a temple that had been repurposed as part of a prison, visited a bamboo area where we sampled sticky rice, observed the production process of banana crisps, experienced a rice wine distillery (known for its potent "happy wine"), and concluded with a visit to a rice paper making workshop. Witnessing the locals engaged in their craft and absorbing their knowledge was truly mesmerizing.

The highlight of our day came during lunch at Savet's family home, where his wife prepared a delightful meal for us. We indulged in flavorsome dishes such as chicken curry, vegetable curry, and a mouthwatering caramelized pork curry. In response to our request for the recipe, Savet even shared a YouTube video guide with us—such a thoughtful gesture.

Later, we informed Savet that we wished to skip the bat cave and focus on the bamboo train instead. Arriving at the bamboo train site in a tuk-tuk, we paid an additional fee to embark on the train ride. The train itself consisted of a simple platform propelled by a lawnmower engine, providing an exhilarating journey along the tracks. However, our experience was somewhat overshadowed by the pushy vendors at the end of the track who attempted to pressure us into making purchases before allowing us to return. Despite this disappointing encounter, we maintained our resolve and patiently awaited our departure.

As the day drew to a close, we returned to our hotel, where we decided to celebrate Valentine's Day by enjoying drinks at the rooftop sky bar. Although we had already indulged in a substantial lunch, we managed to savor some appetizers. Reflecting on the day, we deemed it a good overall experience, despite the slight disappointments encountered during the bamboo train excursion.

Day 38 (Wednesday 15th) - Battambang

The break of dawn marked the beginning of our intrepid expedition, as a vibrant Tuk tuk roared to life, whisking us away to a rendezvous with adventure. Joined by fellow thrill-seekers, including the indomitable Sven from the enchanting land of Germany, we embarked on a quest that promised unforgettable thrills. Our chosen steeds for the day were none other than high-performance mountain bikes, meticulously crafted to ensure a seamless journey through the rugged terrain.

With the sun ascending higher in the sky, our half-day odyssey commenced promptly at 8 am, brimming with anticipation and a burning desire to embrace the unknown. The winding path stretched before us, unveiling a tapestry of verdant landscapes and hidden treasures awaiting discovery. Pedal by pedal, we traversed a total distance of 6 kilometers, each turn revealing a new facet of this enchanting region.

But it wasn't just the landscape that captivated our senses. Along the way, we delighted in the tantalizing flavors of local delicacies, a symphony of tastes that danced upon our tongues. Rice paper, a delicate and versatile delight, beckoned us to savor its crisp texture. Sweet bananas, nature's golden treasure, provided a burst of energy to propel us forward. And who could resist the allure of rice wine, an elixir that embodied the spirit of the land we traversed? We reveled in these culinary delights, a feast for both body and soul.

Our journey of exploration led us to a sacred sanctuary, a temple steeped in centuries of wisdom and reverence. Amidst its hallowed halls, we embraced the tranquility of the moment, allowing our spirits to be nourished by the profound serenity that permeated the air. With hearts enriched by this spiritual interlude, we embarked on the final leg of our quest, homeward bound.

As dusk settled upon the horizon, our hunger stirred, prompting us to seek sustenance in the embrace of Jaan Bai. This culinary haven beckoned us with its tantalizing aromas and promises of gastronomic delight. Within its walls, we embarked on a culinary voyage, indulging in a symphony of flavors carefully crafted by skilled hands. Every bite transported us deeper into the heart of Cambodia's culinary heritage, a testament to the rich tapestry of its cultural heritage.

As the stars adorned the night sky, we retired to our abode, our spirits aflame with the memories forged on this day of exploration and gastronomic indulgence. The allure of the unknown beckoned once again, whispering promises of untold adventures yet to be unfolded on the canvas of our journey. And with hearts ablaze, we eagerly awaited the dawn of tomorrow, when new horizons would unveil themselves, ready to be conquered.

Day 39 (Thursday 16th) - Siem Reap (Golden Temple Retreat)

It was a day of transition as we embarked on a three-hour journey to Siem Reap. We enjoyed an early breakfast, knowing that our car pickup was scheduled for 10 am, allowing us to take things at a relaxed pace. As we savored our breakfast, the girl confirmed the taxi's arrival, and we efficiently packed our belongings, a routine we had become accustomed to during our travels. At 9:45 am, we checked out of the hotel and bid farewell.

The drive to Siem Reap was smooth and uneventful, with no planned stops along the way. The majority of the journey was spent on excellent roads, although it seemed peculiar that despite Siem Reap being directly east of Battambang, we had to initially head north for an hour before making our way east and south. Such is the nature of the roads in this region.

Upon our arrival in Siem Reap, the driver dropped us off in the general vicinity of our destination and surprisingly sought our guidance for directions. Fortunately, armed with Google Maps, we navigated our way to the hotel on Bamboo Street. Although we initially missed the entrance on our first attempt, we eventually found our way there. The fare for the journey amounted to $55 USD, which we promptly paid the driver.

We received a warm and hospitable welcome at the Golden Temple Retreat, where our bags were swiftly taken to our rooms. Sophie, the Hotel Manager, greeted us with refreshing welcome drinks and provided us with detailed information about the hotel. Accompanied by Sophie, we were escorted to our delightful room. The staff at this hotel demonstrated remarkable attentiveness and went above and beyond to ensure our comfort.

Following our journey, hunger began to set in, prompting us to indulge in a delectable light lunch at the hotel. Jem opted for a salad while I relished in the flavors of Chicken Milanese.

In the evening, we ventured on a brief walk into town, hoping to find the Hard Rock Cafe. Unfortunately, it was closed upon our arrival. However, we stumbled upon a charming establishment nearby that not only served burgers but also exuded a more appealing atmosphere. Given my craving for burgers, I ordered a satisfying Big Boy burger and accompanied it with a refreshing beer.

Day 40 (Friday 17th) - Siem Reap - Golden Temple  -Anchor Wat

With the first rays of dawn still lingering on the horizon, we answered the call of adventure, bracing ourselves for an early start that would unfold into an extraordinary day of exploration. The relentless alarm jolted us from slumber at the ungodly hour of 4:15 am, heralding the imminent arrival of our driver and guide at 4:45 am. In the depths of the hotel's reception, a flask of invigorating coffee and two carefully packed breakfasts awaited us, a testament to the hotel's commitment to fuel our epic journey.

Equipped with our pre-purchased three-day passes, meticulously selected online to ensure an uninterrupted voyage through the wonders of Angkor, we set forth with a sense of anticipation. The passes, each bearing our own likeness in a bid to prevent duplicity, granted us access to the hallowed grounds of this ancient realm. A trifling price of $62 USD secured our passage for a span of ten days, affording us the luxury of time to delve deep into the heart of this sacred site.

As the gates creaked open, granting us entry into a realm frozen in time, we emerged as intrepid explorers, undeterred by the early hour. Our footsteps led us to a vantage point unrivaled, a lakeside perch that unveiled the majestic Angkor building in all its grandeur. A silent congregation of early risers gathered, witnessing the spectacle of the rising sun painting the heavens with hues of gold and amber. The crowd swelled with each passing minute, but we remained resolute, ensconced in our privileged position that ensured unobstructed views and photographic masterpieces.

With the sun ascended and our souls awash with wonder, we embarked on a pilgrimage through the sprawling complex of Angkor Wat. Guided by a knowledgeable companion, our journey transformed into an immersive experience, the veil of history lifted with every tale whispered in our eager ears. The guide's meticulous narrative breathed life into the ancient stones, weaving a tapestry of forgotten legends and architectural marvels. The additional cost of the guide proved invaluable, enriching our visit with a depth of understanding that transcended mere sightseeing. Truly, Angkor Wat was a sight to be cherished, etched forever in the annals of our wanderlust-filled hearts.

By the time the clock struck 9:30 am, we had traversed the labyrinthine pathways of Angkor Wat, leaving no stone unturned in our quest for enlightenment. We retraced our steps to the waiting car, our faithful driver ready to bestow upon us the long-awaited breakfast packs. Nestled in a cozy restaurant, we savored the flavors of our morning sustenance, supplementing our nourishment with chilled beverages that provided respite from the tropical embrace of the Cambodian sun.

Our journey pressed forward, carrying us to the mythical realm of Angkor Thom. Here, we discovered more temples and sights, each revealing a unique facet of a bygone era. The ethereal beauty of Tomb Raider captivated our senses, the awe-inspiring sight of trees intertwining with ancient ruins painting a picture of nature's relentless claim on man's creations.

As the sun reached its zenith, signaling the midday hour, our expedition drew to a close. Fatigue etched upon our brows, we retraced our path to the hotel, seeking solace in the tranquil embrace of the poolside oasis. The languid hours slipped by as we surrendered ourselves to the pages of captivating books and the allure of mesmerizing videos.

With the darkness descending, we answered the call of sustenance, venturing to an Italian haven that beckoned from across the road. It was a night devoid of beer or water, our weariness eclipsing any desire for libations.

Day 41 (Saturday 18th) - Siem Reap

Today offered a much-needed respite following a busy day yesterday. We leisurely woke up at 6:30 am and didn't rush to indulge in a delightful buffet-style breakfast until 8 am, savoring the relaxed atmosphere.

Our main agenda for the day centered around a visit to the Angkor National Museum. We arranged for a tuk-tuk from the hotel, although regrettably, we were overcharged for the ride. Nonetheless, we arrived at the museum and were pleasantly surprised by its quality. Each of us paid an entrance fee of 12 USD, and we also opted to enhance our experience by renting audio guides for an additional 5 USD each. The exhibitions showcased a wealth of informative content, delving into the rich history of Angkor Wat.

On our way back, we made a few pit stops at some outlets, indulging in a bit of shopping. Later, we quenched our thirst and satisfied our appetites at a charming corner spot located near the hotel.

During the afternoon, we dedicated some time to penning down our notes and immersing ourselves in reading. As evening approached, we sought culinary delights at POU, a renowned Cambodian cuisine restaurant. Thankfully, we had made a reservation in advance, as the establishment was bustling with patrons. The food we savored surpassed all expectations, tantalizing our taste buds like never before. The chef himself took the time to visit each table, creating a personalized touch. We relished two courses paired with delightful beverages, all for a reasonable price of 39 USD. The luc lak beef and spicy chicken dishes, in particular, were absolute culinary masterpieces.

Overall, today provided us with a much-deserved opportunity to unwind and indulge in delightful experiences, creating lasting memories.

Day 42 (Sunday 19th) - Siem Reap

The dawn broke with a promise of another day drenched in adventure. Anticipation filled the air as we savored an early breakfast at 6 am, fueling ourselves for a day of exploration that lay ahead. At precisely 7 am, our driver and guide arrived, ready to lead us through a labyrinth of ancient wonders.

Our quest began with a pilgrimage to five temples, each veiled in mystique and steeped in history. Among them, the illustrious 'Lady Temple' stood as a testament to the grandeur of a bygone era. We traversed the intricate tapestry of Cambodian landscapes, moving from one temple to another with an unwavering determination.

As our journey unfolded, an unexpected opportunity presented itself. A visit to the Landmine Museum beckoned us, its solemn corridors echoing with the haunting echoes of a tumultuous past. A modest entry fee of 4 USD granted us passage into a realm where stories of courage and resilience unfolded before our very eyes. The cloudy sky overhead cast a somber tone, amplifying the weight of history that enveloped the museum's halls.

By noon, our odyssey through time had reached its zenith. We bid farewell to our driver and guide, gratitude emanating from our souls for their unwavering dedication and invaluable insights.

With rumbling stomachs and weariness gnawing at our bones, we debated the next course of action. Ultimately, we found solace within the confines of our sanctuary, opting to indulge in the culinary delights of the hotel. Jem's taste buds danced to the symphony of flavors in a luc lac dish, while I surrendered to the comforting embrace of a hearty burger.

The noonday sun beat down upon us, its scorching rays a constant reminder of our relentless pursuit of adventure. Exhaustion coursed through our veins, an inevitable consequence of early mornings and the sweltering heat. Succumbing to the siren call of rest, we succumbed to a blissful slumber that stretched over an hour, restoring our vitality amidst dreams of the landscapes we had conquered.

As twilight descended upon the land, we ventured back into the heart of the town, seeking a taste of its vibrant essence. The bustling market beckoned, promising treasures yet to be unearthed. Alas, our hopes were dashed, as the market revealed itself to be a mere congregation of discarded trinkets and forgotten curiosities. Undeterred, we set our sights on Pub Street, eager to immerse ourselves in its vibrant atmosphere. Yet, the early hour found the streets dormant, awaiting the awakening of the nocturnal denizens who would bring it to life.

The passage of time guided our decisions, leading us to a juncture where Jem embarked on a two-hour session of rejuvenation with a Spice and Honey Body Scrub. Sensing contentment in satiating our hunger earlier, we chose to forgo a traditional dinner, finding solace in the remnants of culinary delight from our noontime feast.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected upon the trials and triumphs that had defined our journey. The heat and early starts had exacted their toll, leaving us yearning for respite and restoration. With hearts alight with anticipation for the adventures that awaited us on the morrow, we surrendered ourselves to the embrace of the night, dreaming of the stories that lay yet untold.

Day 43 (Monday 20th) -

This morning, we had a more relaxed start, enjoying a leisurely breakfast after 8 am. The buffet spread offered a delightful selection of food, allowing us to savor the meal at our own pace. After breakfast, we returned to our room for a short reading session before Jem's restlessness sparked our desire to go out and explore.

While passing through the reception area, we unexpectedly ran into Sophie, one of the hotel staff members. It was heartwarming to see how she remembered our names and greeted us warmly. We took the opportunity to inquire about currency exchange, and Sophie kindly informed us that the hotel could assist us. We exchanged 100 USD for smaller notes, as we didn't require a large amount of local currency since it was our last day in Cambodia.

Our first stop was a French café, where we indulged in a delightful blend of French and Cambodian cuisine. Energized by the flavors, we crossed the river to visit a pagoda with a magnificent reclining Buddha. The sight was awe-inspiring, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Continuing our stroll along the river, we came across the Kaleidoscope, where an exhibition of Cambodian paintings captivated our attention. The artwork showcased the diverse wildlife of the region, highlighting the beauty and significance of Cambodia's natural heritage.

Overall, the morning was characterized by a relaxed pace, memorable encounters, and enriching cultural experiences.

Day 44 (Tuesday 21st) - Bangkok

We woke up early to have breakfast since we had a car scheduled to take us to the airport at 7:45 am. Our destination for the day was Bangkok, marking the end of our two-week stay in Cambodia. Unfortunately, the staff at the hotel wasn't fully prepared for breakfast, and we had to request everything. There wasn't much of a buffet that morning, but since we had a later flight, a light breakfast sufficed.

After settling the bill and bidding farewell to Sophie the hotel manager, our friendly taxi driver provided us with a summary of Cambodia's history during the ride to the airport. Upon reaching the international terminal, we encountered a bit of confusion regarding the check-in line. Eventually, we joined the shortest queue, which had only two other people (what could they do send us back ?? of course not). The security check proceeded smoothly, although some individuals were turned away for not wearing face masks.

The flight to Bangkok was short, lasting only 35 minutes. The airline staff efficiently served drinks and a meal, swiftly cleaning up before we landed. Immigration went relatively quickly, and just as we reached the front of the line, the gate closed. However, we were directed to the front of a different queue. Amusingly, the immigration officer asked if we were on our honeymoon, leading to a lighthearted exchange. After collecting our bags, we exchanged our Vietnamese Dong (only larger notes) for Thai Baht and decided to grab some food. We found a decent restaurant called Top Ten in the arrivals area that served extra spicy Thai cuisine.

Opting for the train, we embarked on a journey to our hotel, which involved three transfers and lasted approximately 50 minutes. Since the Sky Train, Bus, and MRT systems do not interconnect, we had to purchase separate tickets. The Montien Hotel, a comfortable five-star establishment, would be our home for the next seven nights. We settled for a higher floor room they offered us. After exploring two nearby shopping centers, Jemma decided to hit the gym while I enjoyed watching YouTube videos in the room.

For dinner, we craved Thai cuisine once again, and to our surprise, the best restaurant happened to be within the hotel itself. The food was delicious, and the service was satisfactory. Jemma ordered Thai chicken basil with rice, while I savored a green chicken curry. Back in the room, we relaxed with Jemma reading and me continuing my YouTube indulgence until it was time to drift off to sleep.

Day 45 (Wednesday 22nd) - Bangkok - Montien Hotel

We enjoyed a restful night's sleep and opted not to set an alarm. Although we woke up around 6:30 am, we indulged in the comfort of our bed until 8 am. Eventually, we made our way down to breakfast, where a delightful buffet awaited us, offering a wide array of delicious choices.

By 9 am, we were ready to embark on another adventure and had to figure out the best way to reach the Royal Palace. After some consideration, we decided to utilize the underground system and embarked on a 15-minute walk to reach the other side. Initially, locating the ticket office proved challenging as the guidebook had misled us, claiming it was outside the west side wall when it was actually inside. The palace was teeming with large crowds and busloads of people, and the scorching heat added to the intensity of the day. Despite feeling that the tickets, priced at 500 baht each, were not worth it, we purchased them. Interestingly, Thai residents could enter for free, which seemed like a more reasonable option.

We strolled around the palace grounds, but unfortunately, most of the buildings were closed, and their arrangement lacked a cohesive plan. Seeking respite from the sun, we found a shaded spot and spent a few hours there before eventually departing and making our way to the nearby river, where we hopped on a boat for a scenic tour. Our destination was the Iconsiam stop, a sprawling shopping mall with Takashimaya as one of its anchor stores, located several stops away. Jem was particularly thrilled about this.

Upon arrival, our parched throats called for refreshment, and we indulged in two iced lemon teas. Afterward, we split up to explore different sections of the mall, as Jem had specific shops in mind that she wanted to visit. I discovered an incredible cinema with 4D capabilities, where the seats move synchronously with the on-screen action.

On our return journey, we decided to take a different route, utilizing the gold line and then the blue line. Feeling a bit peckish, we enjoyed a Caesar salad along the way, satisfying our hunger without overindulging.

Back at the hotel, Jem took advantage of the pool, appreciating the availability of dedicated lanes for swimming. Meanwhile, I retreated to our room to watch YouTube videos and update the blog.

For dinner, we opted for a BBQ/ribs restaurant, but unfortunately, it left us underwhelmed. Our experience was further marred by a neighboring table, where a child was engrossed in their iPad with the volume turned up. Seeking a change of scenery, we briefly explored the nearby market before returning to our room to plan our upcoming weeks, considering transfers and other logistics.

Day 46 ( Thursday 23rd) - Bangkok - Montien Hotel

We enjoyed yet another peaceful night's sleep, and I must say, this bed surpasses all others in terms of comfort. Around 8:30 am, we made our way downstairs to indulge in the breakfast buffet that awaited us.

Today's expedition led us to the illustrious Jim Thompson house, a destination brimming with intrigue. Grouped into factions, we embarked on a guided tour, our minds enriched by the tales that unfolded within those hallowed halls. A cup of coffee provided respite and reflection before our return to the bustling heart of "Siam Central." Jem, lured by the siren song of the shops, set forth to explore the vibrant tapestry that unfolded before her eyes, while I, driven by curiosity, ventured to the legendary MBK—an edifice housing a labyrinth of six floors adorned with a treasure trove of counterfeit goods. Amidst the cacophony of eager vendors vying for attention, I found myself momentarily ensnared on the fourth floor, a realm dedicated to the wonders of electronics. A return to this bustling haven is warranted, for the experience promises to be even more immersive amidst a sea of bustling crowds.

By the stroke of two in the afternoon, we retraced our steps to the sanctuary of our hotel, preparing ourselves for the forthcoming culinary expedition. Shoes exchanged, a short journey ensued, leading us to the threshold of the Maison Hotel, where we congregated with our fellow adventurers, awaiting the commencement of our epicurean odyssey.

The stage was set, and the vibrant streets of Chinatown beckoned, promising to unveil a symphony of flavors that would tantalize our taste buds. Our gastronomic adventure, scheduled to span four hours, commenced promptly at half past three. Through the labyrinthine backstreets, we traversed, pausing at various gastronomic havens to savor the treasures they held. Seventeen delicacies, each more tantalizing than the last, graced our palates. Among the stars of this culinary ballet were a savory rice dumpling, ensconcing a vibrant filling of spinach, accompanied by a fiery dipping sauce, succulent pork satay drenched in a coconut and peanut elixir, served with pickled vegetables, delectable fish cake partnered with crisp cucumber, a comforting bowl of chicken Suki noodle soup, a verdant chicken green curry, entwined with the sweetness of pork sausage, fragrant coconut pancakes, a symphony of flavors in a Chinese pork belly noodle pepper soup, cooling bites of soy ice cream, shrimp caressed by a fiery chili sauce, morning glory weaving its magic, and a finale of mango with sticky rice, a sweet testament to the culinary wonders that graced our journey.

For this epicurean escapade, we entrusted our desires to the capable hands of Chef's Tour, a company whose prowess we had previously experienced during our voyage to Hoi An weeks ago, thus ensuring a feast of the highest caliber.

With our appetites satiated and our senses aflame with the remnants of our culinary voyage, we made the audacious decision to forgo the traditional dinner affair. Instead, we refreshed our weary spirits, granting ourselves a moment of respite before descending upon the sanctum of the bar, where tantalizing libations awaited, summoning us to indulge in the exquisite elixirs that would lull us into a state of contented bliss. A refreshing cocktail and a frothy beer proved to be the perfect companions as we reveled in the stories etched upon our tongues, recounting the epic tale of our culinary conquest through the vibrant labyrinth of Chinatown.

Day 47 (Friday 24th) - Bangkok - Montien Hotel

Last night's sleep wasn't the most restful, possibly due to the indulgence in beer. Nevertheless, we found ourselves awake by 6 am, though we didn't make our way down to breakfast until after 8.

With no firm plans for the day, we deliberated over visiting a museum, an art gallery, or embarking on a river trip. During our discussion, we decided to book a half-day tour with the tour group available at our hotel for tomorrow (Saturday). The tour promises a scenic journey through the canals aboard a long boat.

Eventually, we settled on visiting Lumpini Park and embarked on a leisurely stroll through its serene grounds. Initially, we intended to explore another park, but our path was obstructed by an expressway, rendering it inaccessible. Despite the scorching midday sun, we walked for a while, hoping to find an alternative entrance to the park. However, according to our guidebook, the only entrance was located two tube stops away. Upon reaching that point, we were unable to locate the park, so we decided to abandon our quest and instead ventured into a nearby mall that housed familiar shops.

As 2 pm approached, we made our way back toward the hotel. Along the way, we stumbled upon a fantastic salad bar in a small mall nearby. We delighted in a delicious tuna salad and a classic Caesar salad. While Jem continued exploring the mall and its diverse shops, I made my way back to the hotel.

For dinner tonight, our plan is to return to Siam Central and dine at the Paragon Center. This bustling hub offers a myriad of restaurants, providing us with a wide selection of culinary delights to choose from.

Day 48 (Saturday 25th) - Bangkok - Montien Hotel

The day began with a delightful buffet breakfast, satisfying our taste buds and energizing us for the adventures ahead.

To make the most of the sunny weather, we decided to spend the afternoon basking in the sunshine by the pool, reclining on two comfortable deck chairs. It was a perfect opportunity to relax and soak up the tranquil atmosphere.

Later in the day, we joined a group of six other individuals for an exciting canal tour by boat. The journey took us along the river and into the enchanting canals, providing a captivating glimpse into the local scenery. The highlight of the tour was our visit to the magnificent Wat Arun temple, an awe-inspiring sight that left a lasting impression.

Knowing we had plans for the evening, we opted for an early meal at the hotel around 4 pm. By fueling up with a delicious meal, we ensured that we would have ample energy for the upcoming events.

Hailing a taxi from the hotel, we made our way to the Muay Thai fight stadium, eagerly anticipating an evening filled with thrilling matches. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric as we witnessed several bouts unfold before our eyes. While enjoying the excitement, we also indulged in a couple of refreshing beers each, adding to the lively ambiance. The fighters displayed remarkable skill and dedication, delivering knockout performances that left us in awe.

After the eventful evening, we returned to the hotel and decided to unwind with a nightcap of brandy before calling it a night. It had been a long and memorable day, packed with unforgettable experiences that would be cherished for years to come.

Day 49 (Sunday 26th) - Bangkok - Montien Hotel

Although I wasn't feeling my best this morning, I mustered the strength to have breakfast and carry on with our planned activities.

Upon returning to the pool area, I was disappointed to find that some chairs had been reserved with towels by a family, even though only two out of the four seats were initially occupied. Eventually, more people arrived, and we managed to find a spot to read and bask in the sun. Jem took a refreshing swim to cool off.

At 2 pm, we had a lunch appointment with Mandy, a friend from Singapore who happened to be in Bangkok at the same time for a course. We arrived slightly early, around 1:30, and met up with her at the "Greyhound Cafe" for a delightful meal of pasta and enjoyable conversation. Afterward, we took a leisurely stroll, reaching a canal where we hopped on a fast boat that brought us closer to the river, passing by captivating temples and sights. We even took a moment to savor a cup of coffee.

Around 6 pm, we took the MRT back to the hotel, reminiscing about the wonderful day we had spent with Mandy. Jem decided to hit the gym for a workout session, and later, around 8 pm, we ventured out for a quick bite to eat. Serendipitously, we stumbled upon a local "pub" named "Fork and Cork" just around the corner from our hotel.

Returning to our room, we settled in and continued watching Jeremy Clarkson's farm show on Amazon, which provided us with some light-hearted entertainment to conclude the day. Despite the initial discomfort in the morning, the day turned out to be fulfilling and enjoyable overall.

Day 50 (Monday 27th) - Bangkok - Montien Hotel

After savoring breakfast around 8 am, we set out to accomplish our plans for the day. Jem took care of the laundry, which should be ready for pickup by 4 pm.

Later in the day, we had arranged to go to the cinema. Jem and I decided to pursue our own interests during the day.

I spent some time reading after breakfast before heading to MBK, excited to explore each floor of the shopping center. Although not all the shops were open when I arrived initially, they gradually started opening up. Afterward, I returned to the hotel briefly before making my way to Iconsiam Shopping Center. My intention was to watch the movie "Antman: Quantum" in 4D at the cinema. The seats moved, wind blew, and sprays enhanced the experience during the film, providing an immersive sensation. However, as the movie grew more violent, the effects became somewhat distracting. Overall, it was an enjoyable movie, and I made my way back to the hotel afterward.

For dinner, we decided to revisit "Fork and Cork," conveniently located just around the corner.

Back in our room, we dedicated time to pack our belongings for tomorrow's departure, ensuring that everything was organized for the next leg of our journey.

Day 51 (Tuesday 28th) - Bangkok to Koh Phangan

Today began with an early start as we had to move to a new destination. We enjoyed breakfast at 6:30 am and checked out of our hotel promptly at 7 am. The taxi to the airport was scheduled to pick us up at 7:15 am.

The journey to the airport lasted approximately an hour, but surprisingly, the check-in process didn't take as long as we anticipated. In fact, it only took us 20 minutes. However, we encountered a minor issue with our baggage being overweight by 4 kg. While my bag successfully went through the self-service check-in, Jem's bag did not. We attempted to redistribute some items into our backpacks, but it didn't make a significant difference.

Fortunately, when we reached the check-in desk, the staff member didn't charge us anything and simply checked in Jem's bag. We then proceeded through domestic security and underwent an immigration and passport check, which seemed slightly unusual for a domestic flight.

Upon arrival at Koh Samui, we searched for a bus transfer that would take us to the boat bound for Koh Phangan, our next destination. After a pleasant boat ride, we finally reached Koh Phangan and checked into our accommodation.

Once we settled in, it was already dinnertime. We decided to dine at Locco's and ordered two pizzas since we hadn't eaten since our early breakfast.

As the day progressed, fatigue started to set in. By 9:30 pm, I struggled to keep my eyes open, and at 10 pm, I couldn't resist any longer and went to sleep. However, I found the bed to be a bit firmer than my preference.

Day 52 (Wednesday 1st March) - Koh Phangan

Today, we had the pleasure of waking up around 9 am, experiencing the most restful sleep of our entire trip. We delighted in a provided breakfast, where I chose eggs and toast accompanied by a refreshing juice, while Jem opted for a bowl of granola adorned with fresh fruit.

With the morning underway, we made our way to the beach, basking in the glorious sunshine and savoring the gentle caress of the ocean breeze. As the day progressed into the afternoon, we retreated to the pool, fully embracing a day of pure relaxation and laziness.

As evening descended, we decided to indulge in a delectable Thai dinner at a local restaurant. Unfortunately, our culinary experience was somewhat dampened by the presence of mosquitoes, which seemed determined to feast on us throughout the meal. Despite this minor annoyance, the restaurant offered an affordable and cheerful dining option.

To conclude the day on a high note, we ventured to the beach for some drinks. Sipping on refreshing margaritas, we immersed ourselves in the serene beach atmosphere, serenaded by the harmonious tunes playing softly in the background. It was an evening of unwinding and bliss, creating lasting memories of tranquility and enjoyment.

Day 53 (Thursday 2nd) - Koh Phangan

We had initially planned for an early start, intending to be the first ones down for breakfast at 8 am. However, we ended up sleeping in and didn't fully awaken until just before 9 am.

Satisfying our hunger, we both enjoyed fried eggs on toast accompanied by a refreshing juice and a cup of coffee for breakfast.

After our meal, we made our way to the office/reception to inquire about renting a scooter for two days. Coincidentally, another couple had just returned their scooter, and the rental provider was there to collect it. Seizing the opportunity, we decided to rent it from him, and he seemed content with the arrangement. Renting through the hotel meant less hassle with licenses (which were never checked), deposits, and bike inspections. The process was straightforward - we simply signed the agreement and paid 500 baht for the two-day rental. Upon returning the scooter, we would only need to drop off the keys. It appeared that the hotel had a favorable partnership with the bike rental service, prompting us to wonder if there was some connection between them.

With the scooter in our possession, we gathered our belongings and embarked on our adventure. However, before we could begin exploring, we realized the need to refuel. Thus, our first stop was a petrol station, where we filled up the tank with 100 baht worth of fuel.

Our itinerary for the day involved visiting several beaches along the northern coast. We had the opportunity to explore three different beaches, immersing ourselves in the captivating coastal scenery and embracing the serene atmosphere. When we reached the end of the road, we turned back and made our way through the charming village/town.

As hunger struck, we decided to take a break at a restaurant situated near a pier. Indulging in delectable food and refreshing drinks, we captured precious memories through photographs. After our satisfying meal, we headed back to the hotel.

The rest of the day was dedicated to relaxation by the pool, where we unwound while listening to podcasts, enjoying music, and sipping on a couple of beers.

When dinnertime arrived, we chose to return to Loco's, the Italian restaurant where we had savored pizza on our first night.

Day 54 (Friday 3rd) - Koh Phangan

I awoke to the sound of heavy rain, an uncommon event during our 54 days of travel. Our plan to use the scooter and explore a different beach was foiled by the weather. Nonetheless, we remained optimistic, hoping for improved conditions in the afternoon.

Taking our time, we got up and made our way to breakfast, noticing the bustling activity in the restaurant, likely due to the rain. The usual satisfying breakfast of eggs on toast accompanied by a coffee or juice awaited us. To our surprise, I had hung the "clean my room" sign on the door, not expecting the room to be serviced. However, to our delight, we returned to find our room refreshed and tidied. It was a pleasant surprise indeed.

The morning was leisurely, filled with activities such as reading, watching YouTube videos, and Jem used the time to research and plan for our upcoming travels to Langkawi.

When the rain eased up a bit, we decided to take a walk. Along the way, we discovered a cozy coffee shop where we stopped to enjoy some coffee and indulge in a delicious meal. I opted for a chicken sandwich, while Jem savored some pancakes.

The afternoon mirrored the relaxed atmosphere of the morning, with more reading, unwinding, and engaging in leisurely activities until 4 pm. Jem had a scheduled call with Singapore during this time.

For dinner, we selected Amara, a restaurant situated by the beach. We arrived during happy hour, which meant we could savor 2-for-1 margaritas. Alongside the delightful beverages, we enjoyed some exquisite Thai cuisine and concluded the meal with a glass of wine, creating a delightful evening by the beach.

Day 55 (Saturday 4th) - Koh Phangan

The morning greeted us with a generous dose of sunshine. Since it marked our final day, we decided it was time to return the scooter. Although the thought of extending its use briefly crossed our minds, we ultimately concluded that we could fully enjoy our own beach and pool without it.

For breakfast, I stuck to my usual preference of eggs on toast, while Jem decided to switch things up and ordered a bowl of porridge. To her surprise, the porridge had a unique twist compared to the ones we had experienced in Asia before. It came with chia seeds and a delightful assortment of fruits.

Following our satisfying breakfast, we relocated to the pool area for the rest of the day. During lunchtime, we savored two scrumptious club sandwiches while lounging by the poolside.

The afternoon unfolded in a similar relaxed manner, with me alternating between the room and the pool. I even took the opportunity to indulge in some PC gaming, although I chose not to join the online players engaging in "Sons of the Forest."

As the late afternoon approached, we treated ourselves to cocktails and beer, luxuriating in the serene atmosphere by the pool.

For dinner, we decided to dine at the hotel's restaurant. I delighted in the flavors of the savory sweet and sour chicken, while Jem relished a non-spicy basil chicken dish.

At 9:30 pm, Jem had a scheduled FaceTime call with her father, allowing them to catch up and share stories despite the distance.

In the evening, we dedicated some time to pack our belongings, as we have an early start tomorrow. Our departure entails boarding a high-speed boat to Koh Samui, scheduled for 10:30 am.

Day 56 (Sunday 5th) - Koh Phangan to Koh Samui

We embarked on another day of our journey, starting early and ready to move to a new destination. Our well-honed packing skills allowed us to swiftly gather our belongings, showcasing our growing expertise in transitioning between places.

At 7:55 am, we made our way to the breakfast area, eagerly awaiting the 8 am start of the morning meal. After enjoying a satisfying breakfast, we returned to our room, gathered our belongings, and arrived at the reception area by 9:15 am. There, we settled our bill and patiently waited for the taxi scheduled to pick us up at 9:30 am. Interestingly, another French couple happened to be heading to the port at the same time.

Upon reaching the port, we exchanged our voucher for tickets and proceeded to the Seatran port, where our ferry awaited departure. With ample time before the 10 am departure, we secured seats upstairs while our luggage was safely stored downstairs. The 40-minute crossing proved to be much smoother compared to our initial arrival.

As a considerate gesture, the hotel had arranged for a driver to pick us up from the port (at an additional cost). Upon arrival at the hotel, we went through the check-in process, providing copies of our passports. To our surprise, just 10 minutes later, the staff informed us that they had found an available room for us ahead of schedule.

After settling into our room once again, we decided to treat ourselves to a delicious lunch at the hotel's restaurant. I opted for a satisfying club sandwich, while Jem chose a flavorful Caesar wrap.

The hotel seemed bustling with Western tourists, creating an interesting shift in the atmosphere for us. Until now, we had primarily encountered Asian travelers during our journey. It felt somewhat unusual to find ourselves among fellow Western tourists, but we reminded ourselves that our stay here would be brief, lasting only four nights.

Not far from the hotel, there was a conveniently short "5-minute" walk to the fishing village, which we planned to explore tomorrow as today seemed too crowded to secure poolside seating.

For dinner, we ventured to one of the many restaurants lining the walking street. Our appetites led us to choose pizza and lasagna, satisfying our cravings for Italian cuisine on this particular evening.

Day 57 (Monday 6th) - Koh Samui

We were among the first to head down for breakfast when it opened at 7 am. It was a buffet-style spread, and we enjoyed eggs on toast and other offerings.

By 8 am, we returned to our room and got changed to relax by the pool. Jem took the initiative and reserved two loungers by placing our towels on them. Since yesterday had been a busy day with limited available loungers, we anticipated a similar situation today.

We spent the day sunning ourselves, engaging in activities like reading, listening to music, and enjoying podcasts.

For lunch, I opted to have my meal at the hotel while Jem decided to skip it.

Apart from enjoying the pool, there wasn't much else on our agenda for the day.

In the evening, we dined on the walking street once again, opting for Italian Western cuisine. I ordered a delicious carbonara, while Jem indulged in a pizza.

Day 58 (Tuesday 7th) - Koh Samui

Once again, we started the day early and made our way to breakfast.

By 8 am, we were already at the pool, ready to spend the day there. We set up our belongings and settled in for a relaxing time.

Around 2 pm, we paused for lunch, considering we had dinner reservations at 9 pm.

In the afternoon, I went for a walk and made a stop at a nearby Seven Eleven store to grab some water.

As the evening approached, we enjoyed a quick cocktail at the beach bar, savoring the beachside atmosphere.

For dinner, we chose "The Shack bar" located on the walking street. The highlight of the evening was the amazing steak we had, although it was not cheap. In fact, it turned out to be the second most expensive meal of our entire trip, following my birthday celebration.

While we were dining, a sudden downpour occurred, but luckily we had an umbrella with us. Despite the rain, we embarked on the 10-minute walk back to the hotel.

Day 59 (Wednesday 8th) - Koh Samui

Once again, we started the day with an early breakfast at 7 am. Surprisingly, we were the first ones down, and no one joined us during that time. It seemed like today would be a quieter day.

After breakfast, Jem decided to take a quick walk on the beach. However, the coarse sand didn't compare to the beautiful beach in Koh Phangan, so the experience wasn't as enjoyable.

Today was another lazy day, and the pool area was noticeably quieter. It appeared that many people had left in the last day or so and maybe only here for the weekend.

In the morning, we took the opportunity to do some planning for our upcoming trips in April, May, and August, including our trip to Ireland. I also booked tickets for the GBBF (Great British Beer Festival) and checked in for tomorrow's flight.

For lunch, we went to a sandwich bar on the walking street and opted for salads. I chose a Caesar salad, while Jem went for a tuna salad.

In the afternoon, we spent our time reading by the pool, enjoying the relaxation. It was going to get hectic for a while again.

Before returning to our room to freshen up, we decided to have two beers and two cocktails, savoring the refreshing drinks.

We had dinner at the hotel, although the service was quite slow. Nevertheless, the food was tasty and made up for the delay. I can't really complain I guess its not like we were rushing off anywhere.

Back in our room, we dedicated some time to packing for tomorrow's departure, ensuring everything was in order for our upcoming journey.

Day 60 (Thursday 9th) - Koh Samui - Bangkok

Today was moving day for us. We started with an early breakfast as we were flying back to Bangkok.

At 10 am, we had a car transfer to the airport. Since we were flying business class, we had the privilege of accessing the air-conditioned lounge where we enjoyed coffee and other amenities.

When it was time to board, we took the business class-only bus and settled comfortably in our seats before the rest of the passengers arrived. The flight lasted 55 minutes, and despite the short duration, we were served delicious food onboard.

Upon arrival in Bangkok, we were once again escorted on the business class-only bus. We swiftly made our way through the airport and were delighted to find that our bags were among the first ones off the baggage belt.

Once we reached Bangkok at 1 pm, we checked our money and proceeded to catch the SkyTrain. We took the blue line and later switched trains. After 15 stops, we arrived at the stop closest to our hotel.

We took a quick walk to the nearby Seven Eleven convenience store.

For dinner that evening, we opted to dine in the café located downstairs. The pork and basil dish was delectable, and Jem enjoyed the green chicken curry. Surprisingly great meal.

Considering an early train tomorrow, we decided to call it an early night, ensuring we would be well-rested for the next day's journey.

Day 61 (Friday 10th) - Kanchanapuri

After savoring breakfast around 8 am, we set out to accomplish our plan

Last night's sleep wasn't the most restful due to the loud traffic outside. Jem wisely used earplugs to minimize the disturbance. Despite the early morning start, we managed to get up and ready for breakfast at 6 am. Our taxi arrived promptly at 7 am to take us on a short 2 km drive to the train station, where we purchased two tickets for the train journey to Kanchanaburi.

After a brief wait on the platform, the train finally arrived. We followed the advice we had seen on YouTube and boarded, ensuring our luggage was safely stowed. Opting for the left side of the train as recommended for the best views, we settled into our seats for the approximately two-and-a-half-hour journey with around 16 stops along the way.

Upon reaching Kanchanaburi, we quickly hailed a taxi to take us to the guesthouse. Unsure if we could check in early, we were relieved to hear that our room was indeed ready. After dropping off our bags and giving our phones a quick charge, we wasted no time in continuing our exploration.

Our first stop was the Death Railway Museum, where we ended up spending more time than expected. We took a break at the coffee shop within the museum premises. The museum provided a fascinating glimpse into the history behind the construction of the railway by the Japanese and the experiences of the prisoners of war from various nations involved in its construction.

One of the main attractions in Kanchanaburi was the bridge over the River Kwai, and we were eager to see it. After a half-hour walk, we finally reached the bridge, albeit feeling like the distance on the map was deceiving. The bridge itself held significant historical value, with five metal spans and a wooden bridge constructed beside it as a precaution against air bombings, which eventually targeted both structures.

To make our way back, we hailed a tuk-tuk and negotiated the fare with the driver, who said, "Whatever you want." Returning to the Aussie bar, we rewarded ourselves with a few well-deserved Chang beers, relishing the relaxing atmosphere.

After freshening up back in our room, we ventured out for dinner. Luckily, a delightful Thai restaurant next to the Aussie bar caught our attention, and we enjoyed a satisfying meal of authentic Thai cuisine.

Eager for some rest, we retired early to our room. However, due to the nearby pub playing loud music, we made use of earplugs to ensure a peaceful night's sleep.

Kanchanaburi had already offered us a glimpse into its rich history, and we looked forward to discovering more in the days to come.

Day 62 (Saturday 11th) - Kanchanapuri

We started the day with a delightful surprise at breakfast. We treated ourselves to lovely omelettes, which were extra, and enjoyed complimentary coffee to kickstart our morning.

Our main plan for the day was to take the train to Nam Tok, providing us with the opportunity to cross the famous Bridge on the River Kwai. The journey lasted approximately two hours, and it seemed that both tourists and locals were eager to explore on this Saturday, as the train was packed with enthusiastic travelers. It was interesting to note that the train fare remained consistent at 100 baht for everyone, regardless of their destination, while Thai nationals enjoyed a discounted fare of just 25 baht upon presenting their cards.

The train ride itself was nothing short of amazing. The scenic views captivated us as we chugged along the tracks, passing through picturesque landscapes and witnessing the beauty of the countryside. It was a truly immersive experience.

In Nam Tok, we decided to take the train back to our starting point. This return journey proved to be much quieter, allowing us to secure seats with optimal views. It was a relaxing and enjoyable ride, offering us a chance to reflect on the incredible sights we had witnessed throughout the day.

For dinner, we opted for a Thai tapas restaurant, indulging in a variety of delicious dishes. The flavors and presentation were delightful, creating a memorable dining experience.

As we settled in for the night, we couldn't help but appreciate the unique adventures we had experienced, from crossing the historic bridge to marveling at the stunning scenery along the train route. Our journey in Nam Tok had left a lasting impression, and we eagerly awaited the next chapter of our exploration.

Day 63 (Sunday 12th) - Kanchanapuri

We started the morning with a relaxed pace, enjoying a delicious omelette breakfast that satisfied both of our appetites.

To enhance our exploration of the town, we decided to rent bicycles, with each bike costing 50 baht. Our first destination was the war cemetery, approximately 4 kilometers away. Cycling along the scenic route, we arrived at the cemetery, paying our respects and taking a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made during wartime.

Returning to the town, we followed the path along the river, immersing ourselves in the historic walkway area. Along the way, we made a stop at a local bakery to quench our thirst and grab some refreshments. With renewed energy, we cycled back to our guesthouse, enjoying the sights and sounds of the town.

As the clock approached 2:45 PM, we made our way back to the Kwai Bridge, eager to witness the train's journey across the iconic structure. Unlike the previous day when we walked, cycling provided a much more enjoyable experience. Arriving at the bridge, we marveled at the crowd gathered, capturing the moment through photographs while keeping a respectful distance.

Our curiosity piqued, we ventured into the nearby markets, where Jem found a charming hanging bells decoration with a rabbit on top, symbolizing the current year.

Returning to the guesthouse, we took some time to relax, immersing ourselves in reading while sipping on cups of coffee. Jem, feeling tired, decided to take a quick afternoon nap, allowing her to recharge. Meanwhile, I continued reading, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

Later in the evening, before heading out for dinner, we decided to assess our luggage and shed any unnecessary items we had been carrying along. It was a practical task that lightened our load for the remainder of the trip.

For dinner, we returned to the delightful tapas Thai restaurant, where we had another memorable culinary experience. The friendly ambiance and delectable food made for a perfect evening.

As we retired for the night, we were grateful for the day's adventures, exploring Kanchanaburi by bicycle and immersing ourselves in its rich history and charm.,

Day 64 (Monday 13th) - Penang / Georgetown

Today marked another transfer day in our journey. With our experience in this routine, we efficiently packed our bags and made our way to breakfast, enjoying our usual omelets.

The car we had arranged arrived promptly at 9:30 am for our scheduled 10 am departure. A comfortable Camry awaited us, and we set off at 9:45 am. The journey to the Bangkok airport took just under three hours, making it our third visit in as many weeks.

Arriving at the airport earlier than expected, we had several hours to spare. Luckily, my favorite Thai basil chicken restaurant was conveniently located here, so we indulged in a delicious meal before continuing with the check-in process.

The check-in experience was a bit peculiar as the automatic machines insisted that we were on standby tickets, which was not the case since we had paid extra for flexibility. Approaching the check-in desk, we discovered the issue: the system had no record of our departure from Malaysia by air. We assured them of our planned departure from Melaka by bus on April 3rd, providing confirmation as requested. Once they entered the information into the system, we were cleared to proceed.

Passing through security without any issues, we took a moment to explore the shops and purchase some sunscreen for our upcoming visit to Langkawi. Our attempt to access the Singapore Airlines lounge using my gold card was met with refusal since we were flying with Thai Smile Airways. Undeterred, we made our way to the Miracle Lounge, where we gained entry using our Priority Pass card. Although I had to pay extra, it was well worth it for the comfort, food, drinks, and peaceful atmosphere it offered.

At 6:30 pm, we proceeded to the boarding gate for the 6:55 pm boarding time. Unfortunately, many passengers seemed to be experiencing coughing fits, prompting us to quickly put on our masks. The boarding process was chaotic, with instructions ignored by most passengers. The staff appeared resigned to this behavior, allowing the free-for-all to unfold. We went with the flow, adapting to the situation.

Fortunately, we had secured seats in the exit row on the flight, providing some comfort. Despite the ongoing coughing, we diligently kept our masks on throughout the journey.

Two hours later, we touched down in Penang. However, as soon as the wheels hit the ground and we began taxiing, passengers started standing up and grabbing their bags, disregarding the staff's attempts to enforce order. The urgency to disembark seemed to consume everyone on the plane.

Passing through security and immigration went smoothly, and we exchanged currency before collecting our bags. Our transfer was waiting outside, and after a short half-hour drive, we arrived at our hotel in the city.

Check-in was a breeze, although it was approaching 11 pm, signifying another long day of transferring. We were relieved to finally settle in and rest, ready to embrace new experiences in our destination.

Day 65 (Tuesday 14th) - Penang / Georgetown

Yesterday, during our drive to the airport, Jem surprised me by booking a heritage tour in Georgetown. The tour was scheduled to start at 9 am, so we made sure to wake up early and grab breakfast before heading out. We discovered a charming bagel place called "The Mug Shot" where we enjoyed delicious scrambled egg on toasted bagels and sipped on our coffees.

On our short 5-minute walk back to the hotel, we stopped by a nearby 7-Eleven to buy some water. To our surprise, the driver for our heritage tour was already there, waiting for us.

Initially, we thought the driver would take us to meet other tour participants or simply transport us to the starting point. However, as we embarked on the tour, he began sharing fascinating insights about the history of Georgetown and its landmarks. Our first stop was to admire some impressive buildings and a monument dedicated to past wars. Throughout the tour, we visited various temples, including Indian, Muslim, and Catholic ones. The driver provided explanations at each stop, allowing us to take photos before continuing to the next destination.

We were thrilled when he drove us up Armenian Street, pointing out different murals and street art. He dropped us off and instructed us to walk back down, taking our time to appreciate the artwork and capture memorable photos. At the other end, he directed us to a picturesque jetty, extending into the water and lined with charming houses and shops.

Our final stop was a beautifully restored Peranakan house. The driver arranged our tickets and patiently waited outside while we joined the complimentary tour, which was exceptionally well-delivered. Once the tour concluded, he kindly dropped us back at our hotel, Tien.

After a quick freshening up, we set out to further explore the city and revisit some of the places he had shown us. Along the way, we stumbled upon the Bakery Street Cafe, a recommended spot we had discovered on YouTube through Georgia's channel.

Later that evening, we ventured across the road to a local establishment called "Gravy Baby." It was part of a chain that I had previously visited in Kuala Lumpur, known for its delectable cocktails and pies. Afterward, we discovered another cozy bar where we indulged in desserts and enjoyed more wine and beer.

It was a fulfilling day, filled with exploration, learning, and delightful culinary experiences.
